What is Aquadrate?

Aquadrate is an emollient that contains urea, and is used to treat eczema symptoms. Urea is a commonly used ingredient in dermatology as it has many benefits, like maintaining hydration, softening keratin,and repairing the skin barrier. This makes it a suitable treatment for eczema.

Atopic eczema is a common chronic condition affecting up to 10% of adults worldwide.[1] Although it’s quite prevalent, there’s no cure for it. But treatments like urea can help reduce the symptoms and make living with eczema more manageable.

How does Aquadrate work?

In a few ways.

Aquadrate contains the active ingredient urea. It’s one of the three natural moisturising factors (NMF) found in the outer layer of skin.[2] Since eczema is typically characterised by dry skin, urea helps replenish lost moisture by maintaining hydration.

This also helps improve the skin barrier function, which is often lost due to eczema. The skin barrier function is the body’s defence mechanism against toxins and germs. If it’s damaged, you’re more prone to infections. Urea is able to repair it and prevent the risk of infections. The antimicrobial properties of urea can also help to reduce your risk of an infection. [2]

Additionally, one of the symptoms of eczema includes hard, scaly skin. Urea’s keratolytic properties mean it can break down tough skin, reduce itchiness, and improve the penetration of other topical treatments. [2]

Aquadrate is a soft paraffin-based emollient. Soft paraffin locks in moisture and prevents water loss, keeping your skin moisturised for long periods. [3]

What doses of Aquadrate are there?

Aquadtrate comes in a 10% urea dose in a cream formulation.

How to use Aquadrate

Wash the affected area and pat it dry. Apply a layer of Aquadrate to the affected area, gently rubbing it in. Use it twice a day, preferably morning and evening.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Aquadrate?

If you accidentally use too much, simply wash it off. Although urea is well-tolerated among many people, using too much can cause slight irritation.

How does Aquadrate differ from other eczema treatments?

Answer:
Eczema is commonly treated with topical steroids, which help to lessen inflammation, redness and itching. There are many strengths of steroids and the one you get will depend on the severity of the eczema. Stronger steroids such as clobetasol propionate (brand name Dermovate), are used for more severe cases, while milder steroids like hydrocortisone are used for less severe cases.

Regardless of eczema severity, emollients are an essential part of managing symptoms. They should be used daily to prevent the condition from worsening and to maintain skin moisture. The best time to apply emollients is right after a bath or shower. Gently pat yourself with a towel, leaving the skin slightly damp, and then apply the emollient. This method helps prevent moisture loss and maintains skin hydration.

Are there any side effects of Aquadrate?

Answer:
Urea is a well-tolerated ingredient with very few people reporting side effects from it. Some people using urea might experience mild side effects like itching and a burning sensation. [1]

How effective is Aquadrate for treating eczema?

Answer:
Many clinical studies have found urea to be an effective moisturising treatment. One study with 109 patients with atopic eczema who were treated with 4% urea for 30 days found it decreased water loss and improved hydration.[2]

Another study also found it helped reduce the risk of eczema relapse by up to 37%. 26% of the group using 5% urea cream were eczema-free even after six months.[3] This could be due to the improvement in the skin barrier, which prevents infections and maintains moisture.
