What is Bettamousse?

Bettamousse is a steroid mousse that treats dry scalp conditions like psoriasis and scalp eczema. It contains the steroid betamethasone valerate, which can help lower inflammation and redness by suppressing your immune system.

Eczema on the scalp looks dry and flaky. Atopic eczema is sometimes confused with seborrheic dermatitis (SD), but SD usually has rashes and dandruff, while atopic eczema doesn’t.^[1] Although treatment for the two doesn’t vary significantly, it’s important to differentiate between them so your clinician knows what to prescribe.

How does Bettamousse work?

Bettamousse contains betamethasone valerate, a potent (strong) steroid. It works by suppressing your immune system to reduce swelling, redness and itching. It does this by stopping inflammatory cells from being made and activated.

How to use Bettamousse for atopic eczema

Bettamousse should be used for as little time as possible. For adults, apply a golf ball sized amount of foam onto your head. We don’t prescribe medications for children, but if you need to use it for a child aged six years or older, use half the size of a golf ball.

The starting dosage is twice a day, morning and evening, for about one week. After one week, if your symptoms improve, use it once daily. As your symptoms keep getting better, use it every few days to prevent them coming back. However, if you’ve been using it for seven days and there’s no improvement, contact your clinician for advice.

When using Bettamousse, don’t stop using it suddenly, as this can make your symptoms return. Instead, contact your clinician who will advise you how to gradually stop.

To apply Bettamousse, follow the directions below:

1. Shake the can.
2. Remove the cap.
3. Holding the can upside down, apply the desired amount onto a plate. Don’t apply it on your hands as the heat from the hands can melt it.
4. Massage the mousse into your scalp and allow it to dry naturally.
5. Wash your hands immediately after use.
6. Let the mousse sit in your hair overnight or throughout the day.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Bettamousse?

If you accidentally forget to apply a dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your treatment schedule. Don’t apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If you use too much mousse in your hair, wash it off your scalp immediately and re-apply it. Using too much once is unlikely to cause side effects.
