Highly effective steroid for reducing inflammation.
Dermovate is a steroid that treats atopic, discoid and dyshidrotic eczema. It’s highly potent, making it ideal for severe cases of eczema.
To order Dermovate online, answer some questions about yourself, and our clinicians will recommend the best treatment for you.
Dermovate is a steroid cream that treats skin conditions like atopic, discoid and dyshidrotic eczema. It contains a strong steroid, clobetasol propionate, which is used to treat severe cases of eczema when milder steroids haven’t worked.
There are many types of eczema, each with different symptoms. Atopic eczema is the most common type. It’s characterised by dry, itchy skin that can become inflamed and infected. Discoid eczema can be a feature of atopic eczema and is distinguished by coin-shaped patches on your skin that tend to be red or purple. And lastly, dyshidrotic eczema is commonly found on the hands and feet of adults, and its symptoms include blisters that can pop and cause infections.
Inflammation (swelling) is often your body's way of responding to an allergic reaction or irritant and is caused by the release of cells like lymphocytes and eosinophils.
Dermovate (like other corticosteroids) works to reduce inflammation by blocking the release and action of these inflammatory cells. It’s a topical corticosteroid, meaning you apply it to your skin and it works to treat inflammation in that area.
There are three versions of Dermovate available: a cream, an ointment and a scalp treatment. All three contain the same active ingredient at the same concentration, but they’re all used differently. Dermovate scalp is only used on your scalp and treats conditions like psoriasis and scalp eczema. It comes as a liquid solution in a bottle, which makes application easy.
Dermovate cream and ointment are similar, and they both treat skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis. The main difference between them is their consistency and formula: Dermovate cream is thinner and more runny, whereas Dermovate ointment is thicker and heavier. The ointment is typically used for dry and flaky skin and, because of its different formula, is also better absorbed by your skin, making it more effective than creams.

Cream and ointment
To use Dermovate cream or ointment, follow the instructions below:
Your clinician will decide your dosage, but generally it’s applied once or twice a day for up to four weeks. Don’t stop using Dermovate even if your skin is better. This is because stopping suddenly can make the symptoms return. As your skin starts to get better, your clinician will gradually lower the dosage.
If you’re applying Dermovate to your face, apply it for a maximum of five days. The skin on your face is thin, and using it for longer than this can cause side effects.
Scalp solution
You’ll usually apply it on your scalp in the morning and at night. As your eczema gets better, your dosage will be reduced and eventually stopped. To use the scalp solution:
You should start to see some improvement after a few days of using Dermovate. However if your skin still looks the same after two weeks, contact your clinician. They might increase your dosage or suggest a different treatment.
If you accidentally apply too much to your skin, phone the doctor or go to the hospital. Using a lot can cause side effects and make you ill.
If you forget to apply a dose of Dermovate, apply it when you remember. Unless it's close to the next scheduled time. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your normal treatment schedule. Don't apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
