What is Fifty:50?

Fifty:50 is available as an ointment containing white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin. These two ingredients keep your skin hydrated by trapping in moisture.

There are different types of eczema, including atopic eczema, discoid eczema and dyshidrotic eczema. While they can all have different causes and symptoms, there are also some common traits like dry, scaly skin, itching, and skin discoloration.^[1]

How does Fifty:50 ointment work for eczema?

When you have eczema, one of the most common symptoms is dry skin. This happens when your body doesn’t produce enough skin oils, which leads to your skin losing moisture and becoming more sensitive to irritants.

Fifty:50 ointment contains white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin, which form a protective film on the surface of your skin. This locks in moisture, soothes and improves the texture of your skin.^[2] It also acts as a barrier against irritants that trigger eczema flare-ups.

What forms of Fifty:50 are there?

Fifty:50 is only available as an ointment, in either 250g or 500g tubs. It contains 50% of both white soft paraffin and liquid paraffin in a 50/50 mix (hence the name). You’ll likely be advised to apply it up to four times a day depending on your skin condition and the severity of your symptoms.

How to use Fifty:50 ointment for eczema

When using it as an emollient, just apply a thin layer to the areas of your skin that need it and gently rub it in. Try to apply it in the direction your hair grows to prevent any irritation of your hair follicles.

When using it as a bath additive, dissolve it in hot water, then simply use it as a soap substitute. Take care when you get out of the bath, because the tub can become slippery. After you finish bathing, gently pat your skin using a clean towel.

And when using it as a skin cleanser, use the ointment as needed when bathing or in the shower.

If you’re using Fifty:50 ointment at the same time as another topical treatment, like a steroid cream, you should wait for at least 30 minutes between applications. This is to allow enough time for the ointment to be absorbed into your skin.

Make sure to keep the tubs containing Fifty:50 ointment away from naked flames because they’re flammable. If you apply it on larger areas of your body, you should also stay away from fire or flames, because your skin or the pieces of clothing that have come into contact with the ointment can catch fire.

How long does it take Fifty:50 ointment to work for eczema?

Fifty:50 ointment starts to hydrate your skin and relieve itching almost instantly. But it might take a few days for your eczema to disappear completely. Exactly how long this’ll take will vary from person to person, depending on how often you use the ointment, your skin condition and its severity.
