What is Zipzoc?

Zipzoc is a medicated stocking containing 20% zinc oxide. It helps treat skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis by forming a protective barrier and promoting wound-healing. Zinc is an essential nutrient in your body, with 5% of your total body zinc being found in your skin.^[1] It’s important for protein and tissue repair and has been used as a skin treatment for many years.

Atopic eczema can be caused by many factors, one of which is zinc deficiency. Studies have found that a zinc deficiency was linked to worsening eczema symptoms.^[2] So, by using Zipzoc, you can increase your skin’s zinc levels to improve your eczema symptoms.

How does Zipzoc work?

Zipzoc contains zinc oxide, an important nutrient involved in many of your bodily processes. Without it, your eczema symptoms may worsen. Some of these processes include;

Production of filaggrin. Filaggrin is a protein that’s needed to form your skin’s barrier. It also helps balance your skin’s pH levels and retains moisture. A zinc deficiency can decrease filaggrin production.^[3] This causes your skin to lose its protective barrier, causing water loss and increasing your risk of developing infections.
Wound healing. A study in mice found that when topical zinc was applied, pro-inflammatory molecules, like IL -1, decreased, and anti-inflammatory molecules increased. So it can be assumed that a zinc deficiency may increase the risk of swelling on eczematous skin.^[1]
Antimicrobial effects. Zinc oxide has antibacterial and antifungal properties. ^[4] It can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a common bacterial infection in eczema patients.^[5]

Is Zipzoc better than topical zinc?

Answer:

Since the concentration of topical zinc can vary, it’s hard to compare its effectiveness with Zipzoc. But there are additional benefits of using Zipzoc which might make it a better treatment option.

If you have eczema, your doctor might have recommended that you use a bandage after applying medicine. This is known as wet wrap therapy, and is used to help retain moisture and improve healing. Zipzoc is like a 2-in-1 treatment, instead of applying a separate medicine on your skin, you can just wear the zinc impregnated stocking, which helps prevent water loss and increases wound healing. But if you wanted to, you could also use another treatment before you wear the stocking. Wearing Zipzoc can improve the absorption of drugs like steroids, making them more effective. However, check in with your clinician before using steroids under a bandage.

What are the alternatives to Zipzoc?

Answer:

The first-line treatments for eczema are usually steroids, which help to lower inflammation and redness. There are different strengths of steroids available, and the one you get depends on how severe your eczema is. Examples of some steroids include Dermovate, Elocon and Betnovate.

You don't have to do a patch test before using Zipzoc, but it is recommended. This is to make sure you have no side effects or allergic reactions when using it (even though side effects are rare).
