How to take Serc tablets

Always take Serc at the advice of your clinician.

Swallow Serc tablets whole without crushing or chewing them.
Drinking water with Serc tablets can help you swallow them and avoid dry mouth.
You can take Serc tablets with or without food and they’ll still work just as well. If you can, take Serc with a meal to avoid stomach problems.
Try to take Serc tablets at the same times throughout the day. Having them with your breakfast, lunch and dinner may help you remember. You could also try setting alarms.

How long does it take Serc to work?

Serc is absorbed from your stomach very quickly, but it takes time to accumulate in your system. It often starts improving your symptoms in a few days, but for some people it might take a few weeks before you see it work at its best.

Taking Serc tablets also helps your vertigo get better over time. It seems to decrease the amount and severity of attacks over the months you take it. One study even suggests that taking Serc is linked with a long term improvement in vertigo attacks, even after you stop taking it. ^[1]

What should I do if I make a mistake while taking Serc tablets?

If you forget to take Serc tablets, just wait until it’s time for your next dose. Don’t take twice as much Serc to make up for missing some. If you take too many Serc tablets, you should get advice from a clinician straight away. It might help to bring the packaging of the medication with you.

How are Serc tablets different from other treatments for vertigo?

Answer:

There are a few different main treatments for vestibular vertigo and they all work a little differently. While Serc tablets are a histamine analogue, vertigo is also sometimes treated with other classes of drugs.

Cinnarizine is an antihistamine medication, so it works a little differently from Serc, which is both a histamine antagonist and partial agonist (meaning that it activates some histamine receptors and blocks others). Prochlorperazine, sometimes called by the brand name Stemetil, also treats vertigo. It’s a type of medication called a phenothiazine.

They all treat vertigo caused by Ménière's disease, BPPV, labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis in separate ways. So if one of these treatments hasn’t worked for you, Serc might be the one that does.

Do I need a prescription for Serc tablets?

Yes, you can only get Serc on prescription. It’s a strong medication and it’s only meant to treat certain conditions. If you think Serc tablets might help you with your vertigo, you can talk to our clinicians about your health.

Are Serc tablets similar to any other treatment?

Answer:

There’s a generic version of Serc, which is simply called Betahistine (after its active ingredient). And because they have the same active ingredient, they work in pretty much the same way. The two tablets will just vary a bit in price, packaging and appearance.

How effective are Serc tablets?

Answer:

Serc tablets are a very effective treatment for vertigo with a range of different causes. It’s also at least as effective as other common treatments for vertigo like Cinnarizine and Prochlorperazine.^[2] ^[3]

One study looked into the results of Serc tablets on vestibular vertigo. Vestibular vertigo is a category including Ménière's disease, BPPV, labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis. It found that after two months, 95.4% of patients graded their experience as good or excellent. ^[1]
