Mupirocin ointment is a topical antibiotic that’s commonly used to treat bacterial skin infections. It works by killing bacteria on your skin's surface. It's frequently prescribed for conditions that affect the skin like folliculitis or impetigo (which can look like a small scratch or itchy eczema) and minor skin wounds.
Folliculitis is when hair follicles become inflamed, causing red bumps that can turn into pus-filled pimples. It can be itchy and uncomfortable. It's often caused by bacteria or fungi infections, which can happen due to shaving, wearing tight clothing, skin irritation, ingrown hairs and immune system issues.
Mupirocin calcium, the active ingredient in Mupirocin ointment, is a natural antibiotic found in a type of bacteria called Pseudomonas fluorescens. It works by targeting a molecule inside bacterial cells known as isoleucyl-transfer RNA, which is vital for crafting proteins that bacteria need to survive.
Mupirocin acts in two ways: at lower concentrations it stops bacteria from growing (acting as a bacteriostatic agent), and at higher concentrations, like the ones reached when you apply it directly on your skin, it kills off the bacteria (acting as a bactericidal agent).
Mupirocin comes in only one strength, Mupirocin 2% ointment. Each gram of ointment contains 20mg mupirocin. It’s typically used up to three times a day for no more than ten days.
You can also find Mupirocin 2% nasal ointment, which is meant for use in the nose. It's used to treat bacteria in the nostrils, especially for patients with staph (including MRSA) infections. Both ointments have the same active ingredient concentration. The main difference between the two ointments is that regular Mupirocin ointment is for use on your skin, while Mupirocin nasal ointment is specifically for inside your nose.
How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. Remember, it's important to use Mupirocin ointment just as your clinician has advised. But here are the guidelines you should follow when applying Mupirocin ointment on your skin:
Usually, Mupirocin ointment eliminates the bacteria on your skin within ten days of starting treatment. It's not recommended to use it for more than ten days, so if you don't notice any improvements after this time, let your clinician know. They might need to adjust your treatment plan.
If you've used more Mupirocin ointment than prescribed, let your clinician know and ask them for advice. And if you or your child swallows Mupirocin ointment by accident, seek medical help right away.
Don’t worry if you forget to use Mupirocin ointment. Just apply it as soon as you remember and continue with your normal treatment plan. But if your next dose is less than an hour away, it's okay to skip the missed one. Don't double up on your dose to catch up.
Stopping treatment with Mupirocin ointment too soon might not get rid of all the bacteria causing your infection, and your symptoms come back. So it’s best to always check with your clinician about when it's safe to stop using the ointment.
