Cardioplen XL Felodipine
What is Cardioplen XL?
Cardioplen XL is a drug used to manage high blood pressure. It can also be used to reduce the frequency of anginal attacks. A blood pressure reading of anything over 140/90mmHg is considered high and can be linked to an increase in the development of strokes, heart failure, and renal failure .
Cardioplen XL contains the active ingredient felodipine which works to help reduce high blood pressure. Drugs containing felodipine are from a group of medicines called calcium-channel blockers.
Calcium-channel blockers work by widening the arteries which in turn reduces resistance and lowers blood pressure . Reducing blood pressure levels can lower the risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. Felodipine is also known to decrease the likelihood of strokes.
How does Cardioplen XL work?
The active ingredient used in Cardioplen XL, felodipine, works by preventing the entry of calcium into the arteries. Blood pressure is increased when calcium enters the middle layer of the arteries called the smooth muscle. When calcium enters the smooth muscle it causes the arteries to narrow therefore increasing resistance in blood flow . This then causes an increase in blood pressure. The active ingredient in Cardioplen XL helps by blocking the calcium channels in the smooth muscle. This in turn relaxes and widens the arteries thereby reducing the resistance and lowering blood pressure . This reduces the strain on your heart.
Felodipine also opens up the arteries supplying blood to your heart, allowing more blood and oxygen to reach the heart muscle. A better blood flow to the heart can help to decrease the chances of angina occurring .
What doses of Cardioplen XL are there?
Cardioplen XL comes in 3 different doses: 2.5mg, 5mg and 10mg. The dose used can depend on a number of things, including the particular condition being treated. In most cases, you’ll find that the following doses are used.
For high blood pressure:
The usual dose is 5mg once a day but this may be increased to a maximum of 20mg.
For angina:
The dose is 5mg once a day but it can increase up to a maximum of 10mg once a day.
For elderly people:
The starting dose can be lowered to 2.5mg once a day.

How to take Cardioplen XL
You should take Cardioplen XL exactly as advised by our clinician. Depending on what’s being treated, our clinician will tell you what dose to take.
- Take the tablet with a full glass of water.
- Try to have a regular schedule to take your tablet, preferably in the morning.
- Take your tablets on an empty stomach or after a light meal (not high in fat or carbohydrates).
- Do not take your tablet with grapefruit juice or grapefruit. This can increase the amount of felodipine in your body and worsen the side effects.
- Keep taking your treatment until our clinician tells you to stop.
If your dose is increased or you accidentally take a higher dosage, you may develop very low blood pressure. If you feel faint, light-headed or dizzy, seek urgent medical advice.
How long does Cardioplen XL take to work?
Cardioplen XL is called a prolonged release tablet. This means the active ingredient, felodipine, is released slowly and absorbed by your body over several hours. Although felodipine does start to work on your body almost instantly, it may take a couple of weeks before you start to feel the full effect .
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you forget to take a dose of Cardioplen XL it's fine. Skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your regular time. Do not take a double dose.
