What is Indapamide?
Indapamide is what’s known as an antihypertensive, which belongs to a group of medicines called diuretics (water tablets). It’s used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and a condition called oedema, which is when there’s excessive swelling caused by fluid becoming trapped in your body’s tissues.
Indapamide also helps to widen blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through your body, which helps to lower blood pressure. It’s a tablet you take daily and is also available as a slow-release tablet (which lasts longer). You may also be prescribed an additional antihypertensive tablet alongside Indapamide to help manage your high blood pressure.
How does Indapamide work?
Indapamide is a diuretic, also known as a "water tablet." Diuretics work in your kidneys to increase urine production, making you pee more often to release the fluid build-up from unwanted water and salt from the body. Essentially, the less fluid you have in your body and blood, the lower your blood pressure. This can also help with heart failure symptoms, including oedema (swelling). Compared with other diuretics, Indapamide only slightly increases urine production, as the main way it works is by causing your blood vessels to widen. This reduces the pressure inside, which helps treat your high blood pressure.
Who is Indapamide for?
Indapamide is primarily for people who suffer from high blood pressure but can also help prevent heart failure and oedema. Oedema occurs when you have excess salt and fluid in your blood, which can increase your risk of heart failure. It helps with swelling, controls fluid retention, and is used long-term to prevent heart complications.
What doses does Indapamide come in?
Indapamide is available as tablets and as slow-release tablets (which release medicine into the body gradually). For heart failure, you may be prescribed 2.5 mg to 5 mg taken once a day. It may also be given mixed with perindopril (an ACE inhibitor) to treat your high blood pressure. For high blood pressure, you may be prescribed 2.5mg as normal tablets or 1.5 mg once a day as slow-release tablets.

How to take Indapamide
Follow the instructions given by your clinician for Indapamide to work effectively. The usual starting dose is 2.5 mg, taken once a day. After four weeks, your clinician may increase your dosage to 5 mg a day if your blood pressure is still high.
- Take one tablet once a day.
- It’s best to take it in the morning so you don’t have to keep going to the toilet at night.
- It can be taken with or without food.
- Swallow whole with water.
How long does Indapamide take to work?
Treatments for high blood pressure are usually lifelong, so keep taking the medicine until your prescriber has told you to stop. Indapamide is rapidly absorbed after ingestion and reaches peak blood levels within one to two hours. However, it can take two to four weeks to see an effect on your blood pressure levels, and it can take several months for you to feel and see the full effects of Indapamide overall.
What happens if I make a mistake taking Indapamide?
If you usually take your tablet in the morning, and it’s now after 4 p.m., skip the forgotten dose and wait till the next morning to take your usual dose. Don’t take a double dose to make up for the missed one. If you’ve taken more than you should, you may experience nausea, cramps, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, and dehydration. In this case, seek urgent medical attention.
