Natrilix SR is a prolonged-release tablet that you take once a day. It’s commonly prescribed for high blood pressure (hypertension), but it can also be used to treat swelling caused by fluid buildup in your tissues, known as oedema.
High blood pressure is very common and affects more than one billion people worldwide . It’s a condition where the force of blood against the walls of your arteries is consistently too high. This can put extra strain on your heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of serious health problems like heart disease, stroke and kidney problems. Hypertension is typically defined as a reading of 140/90mmHg or higher (or an average of 135/85mmHg at home). If you're over 80, the threshold is usually set at 150/90mmHg (or an average of 145/85mmHg at home).
The readings taken at home are sometimes lower than those taken at the doctor's office because of something called "white coat syndrome". This is when the anxiety of being in a doctor’s surgery causes your blood pressure to rise. But if your blood pressure is normal at home, don’t worry, you don’t need treatment for high blood pressure.
On the other hand, ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg. For people over 80 years old, the target is to keep it below 150/90mmHg (or 145/85mmHg at home).
How does Natrilix SR work?
Natrilix SR is a prolonged-release tablet containing indapamide as its active ingredient. Indapamide is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called thiazide-like diuretics. Diuretics (or “water pills”) work by helping your kidneys remove excess water and salt from your body through urine. By doing so, they lower the volume of fluid in your blood vessels, which reduces the pressure on the walls of your arteries. This helps to lower and control high blood pressure.
But indapamide is somewhat different from other diuretics in that it doesn't make you urinate a lot. This is beneficial because it allows your body to retain ions like potassium — you need potassium ions for your body to maintain a normal heartbeat and for your heart muscle to work properly.
Indapamide also works by relaxing your blood vessels, so that blood passes through more easily. This lowers blood pressure further.
What doses of Natrilix SR are there?
Natrilix SR only comes in one strength: Natrilix SR 1.5mg. Each tablet contains 1.5mg indapamide.
Typically, you take one tablet once a day. It's important to follow your clinician’s advice and continue taking it for as long as they tell you to. Treatment for hypertension is usually life-long.

How to take Natrilix SR
The usual dose is one tablet a day, preferably in the morning. You can take it with or without food. Just remember to swallow it whole with a glass of water and avoid crushing or chewing it.

How long does it take Natrilix SR to work?
Indapamide, the active ingredient in Natrilix SR, starts working shortly after you take it, usually within a few hours. But this can vary from person to person. Once you've taken a dose, it takes around 12 hours to reach peak levels in your bloodstream. With regular use, the medication's levels in your blood become more consistent between doses. It typically takes about 7 days for the drug to reach a steady level in your blood.
It may take a few weeks before you see any noticeable improvements in your blood pressure. And it may take three to four months until you see its full effect. So be patient and continue taking the medication as prescribed.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Natrilix SR?
If you accidentally take too many Natrilix SR tablets, it's important to contact your clinician right away. Taking a very large dose can lead to symptoms like nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, cramps, dizziness, drowsiness, confusion and changes in urine production.
If you forget to take a dose, just take the next one at your usual scheduled time. Avoid taking a double dose to make up for the missed one.
Since high blood pressure treatment is usually long-term, it's important to ask your clinician before you stop taking your medication. That’s because if you stop suddenly, it can make your blood pressure spike and increase your risk of heart attack or stroke.

What is the difference between Natrilix and Natrilix SR?

Both Natrilix and Natrilix sustained release (SR) contain the active ingredient indapamide. However, sustained release tablets release the medication gradually over time, providing a prolonged effect. This makes Natrilix SR 1.5mg just as effective in lowering blood pressure as Natrilix 2.5mg.
The benefit of Natrilix SR is that it cuts the risk of low potassium levels in half. This helps protect your heart and lowers the risk of irregular heart rhythms, muscle weakness or high blood sugar levels.
Is Natrilix SR similar to other treatments for hypertension?

Indapamide, the active ingredient in Natrilix SR, is also available as a generic (unbranded) medication. Both these treatments are diuretics, and because they contain the same active ingredient, they both work in largely the same way. There are, however, a few other medications for hypertension that work similarly to Indapamide to lower your blood pressure.

How is Natrilix SR different from other treatments for hypertension?

There are several types of high blood pressure medications. The best one for you depends on factors like your age and other health conditions.
If you're under 55 or have type 2 diabetes, you'll likely be prescribed an ACE inhibitor (such as captopril, enalapril, ramipril) or an angiotensin-2 receptor blocker (such as candesartan, valsartan, olmesartan).
If you're over 55 or of African or Caribbean origin, and you don't have type 2 diabetes – you'll usually be offered a calcium channel blocker (such as amlodipine, felodipine, verapamil).
Other medications like beta-blockers (such as atenolol, bisoprolol, metoprolol) may be prescribed for people with hypertension and heart failure or hypertension and angina.
