Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections. It belongs to a class of antibiotics known as penicillins, and is often prescribed to treat various types of skin and soft tissue infections (like infected eczema).
Infected eczema, also known as secondary infected eczema, happens when bacteria or other microorganisms infect eczematous skin. In the beginning, infected eczema will feel itchy and look red. If you examine it closely in natural light, you might notice a shiny, orange-like appearance on the skin, similar to dusted shimmer. And as the infection worsens, you may observe oozing and crusting with a yellow or golden colour.
Flucloxacillin belongs to a class of antibiotics called penicillins, which target bacterial cell walls. Flucloxacillin inhibits a protein called penicillin-binding protein (PBP), which is essential for the formation of bacterial cell walls. By interfering with the cell wall synthesis, Flucloxacillin weakens the bacterial cell walls and causes the bacteria to die off, which helps clear bacterial infections. Flucloxacillin only works against bacteria that are susceptible to penicillin-based antibiotics, such as Staphylococcus aureus (which is responsible for most cases of infected eczema).
Because it’s used to treat a range of infections throughout your body, Flucloxacillin is available in different forms: as an injection, capsules, or oral solution. The capsules come in two strengths: Flucloxacillin 250mg and Flucloxacillin 500mg.
If you have infected eczema, you’ll likely be advised to take 500mg Flucloxacillin four times a day for 5-7 days.

It’s important to always take Flucloxacillin capsules exactly as your clinician has instructed you, but here are some general guidelines for you to follow:
People often see improvement in their symptoms within 2-3 days of starting Flucloxacillin. But the time it takes for it to start working can vary from person to person. It's important to remember that even if you feel better, you still need to take the full course of treatment as prescribed by your clinician. This is to make sure the infection is completely cleared and to prevent it from coming back.
If you or your child have taken too much Flucloxacillin, contact your clinician or go to the nearest hospital and, if possible, bring the pack and any remaining capsules with you. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as usual.
If you have more questions about using this medicine, just ask our clinical team. They’re working around the clock to answer any questions or concerns you might have.
