Tetralysal capsules contain the active ingredient lymecycline, which is often used to treat acne and bacterial infections. It belongs to a group of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. They work by stopping bacteria from making the proteins they need in order to survive.
Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition that involves red, inflamed papules (raised bumps) forming around your mouth. Sometimes, when bacteria gets trapped inside these bumps, they can become filled with fluid or pus (known medically as pustules). Perioral dermatitis can also involve scaly patches. The condition can affect anyone, but it typically affects young women.
How does Tetralysal work?
Tetracyclines work by preventing bacteria from spreading. They’re broad-spectrum antibiotics, which means they can be used to help manage a range of conditions. They work against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Tetralysal often takes between 8-12 weeks to treat perioral dermatitis. As well as killing bacteria, many antibiotics, including tetracyclines, also have anti-inflammatory properties that can help to clear perioral dermatitis.

How to take Tetralysal for perioral dermatitis
The usual dose for Tetralysal capsules is one a day. Your medication will come in aluminium strips — carefully tear these to remove each capsule before you take it.
Swallow your capsule whole, with a glass of water. Avoid chewing the capsule or trying to open it, as the medication won’t work properly this way.
There’s never any need to double up on your dose of Tetralysal. If you miss a capsule, take it as soon as you remember (as long as it’s not too close to your next dose). If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and carry on taking your capsules as normal.
Are there different doses of Tetralysal?
Tetralysal is available as 300mg capsules. This should be a strong enough dose to help clear your symptoms.
The capsules are taken once a day. They can be taken for up to 6 months, but for perioral dermatitis, it’s usually recommended you take them for 2-3 months.

How is Tetralysal different from other treatments for perioral dermatitis?

Taking lymecycline is just one of the ways you can treat perioral dermatitis. Other tetracyclines are often used, including doxycycline (sometimes branded as Vibramycin) and minocycline (also found in Minocin and Acnamino). Topical antibiotics are also used, including erythromycin and metronidazole.
While you’re managing your condition, you might be told to avoid topical creams that contain steroids, such as corticosteroids. This includes lotions and ointments. Steroids are thought to aggravate perioral dermatitis rashes, and can even be responsible for causing the redness and inflammation around your mouth.
Will Tetralysal cause any side effects?
Answer:
All medications can cause side effects, but not everybody experiences them. Responses to medications differ person-to-person, so there’s no guarantee which side effects you might encounter, if any at all.
Common side effects reported while taking the capsules include nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pains and headaches. You can speak to a clinician if any symptoms like this are making you want to stop taking the capsules.
If you develop a swollen face, tongue, or throat, and have difficulty breathing, it might mean you’re having an allergic reaction. In this case, head to your nearest hospital’s emergency department and get immediate medical attention.
If you’re pregnant, you should avoid using Tetralysal. Using the capsules can cause discolouration of your child’s teeth if you take them during the second or third trimester.
