Vitamin D ointment for your skin.
Dovonex is a vitamin D treatment for psoriasis. It can help reduce redness, inflammation and scaling within a couple of weeks.
To order Dovonex, answer a few questions online and get a recommended list of personalised treatment options. Then we’ll deliver it to you the next working day.
Dovonex is a common, vitamin D based ointment for psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory disease that affects 1-3% of the world’s population. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that triggers inflammation, caused by an overproduction of skin cells known as keratinocytes. These cells produce keratin, which is required for the healthy growth of your hair and nails. However excess keratin can lead to the formation of scaly patches known as psoriatic lesions.
Dovonex can help treat symptoms of psoriasis by blocking the production of immune cells and reducing cell growth. You’ll usually apply it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Dovonex contains a vitamin D analogue called calcipotriol. An analogue is the term given to a drug that’s chemical structure is similar to that of another drug. Dovonex (calcipotriol) shouldn’t be confused with vitamin D supplements, which you’ll take if you’re vitamin D deficient or at risk of deficiency.
Calcipotriol works in two ways to treat psoriasis:
There’s a similar ointment to Dovonex called Dovobet. But where Dovonex only contains calcipotriol, Dovobet also contains betamethasone (a steroid). Both are effective at treating psoriasis, but studies show that a combination of vitamin D and steroid produces better results.
There’s also a generic version of Dovonex available. They both contain the same active ingredient and are available in the same doses. The main differences are the packaging and the price. It’s entirely which one you choose but, most of the time, the generic one is cheaper.

When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. Apply a thick layer of cream to the affected area, then rub it in gently, making sure your psoriasis is covered. After application, wash your hands to stop it spreading to other parts of your body.
Your doctor will tell you how much to apply but, generally, two applications are recommended (preferably once in the morning and once in the evening).
If you use too much, contact your doctor straight away. Using too much can alter the calcium levels in your body.
If you accidentally forget to apply a dose, use it as soon as you remember. Unless it's close to the time of your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose.
You should see some improvement in your symptoms within a couple of weeks. At first, you may notice your flaky patches go away. In the next couple of weeks your redness and swelling should lessen. But to see the full effects, it can take up to 12 weeks.
