What is Epaderm?

Epaderm provides a range of emollients for dry skin. Emollients are moisturisers that contain hydrating ingredients that are typically free from fragrances and harsh irritants. They are effective at treating dry skin and essential for treating conditions like psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a dry skin condition that’s characterised by scaly, rough patches, also known as psoriatic lesions. It’s caused by an overactive immune system that speeds up skin cell turnover, leading to a build-up of skin cells on the surface. This leads to dry, rough skin and a damaged skin barrier (meaning your skin’s ability to retain moisture and keep out harmful germs is reduced). ^[1]

How does Epaderm work?

The protective function of the skin barrier plays an important role in maintaining healthy skin. The outermost layer, referred to as the stratum corneum, helps this process by creating a barrier with the help of keratinocytes — cells that produce keratin cells and lipids. This helps prevent water loss and stops the entry of germs, which could cause infections.^[2]

However, for people with psoriasis this function is disrupted due to an overproduction of keratinocytes. The immune system is also responsible for this in people with psoriasis, as it causes inflammation. ^[2]

Using emollients can help restore your skin barrier by creating a physical layer that prevents water loss. This helps to reduce inflammation, scaling, itching, and redness, overall promoting healthier skin.

What products of Epaderm are there?

There are two main Epaderm products: a cream and an ointment. Both contain similar ingredients and are effective at treating dry skin. The main difference is ointments have a thicker and oilier consistency than creams. This makes them more effective at repairing your skin barrier and treating dry skin. Epaderm ointment can also be used as a bath additive to help restore hydration.

How to use Epaderm

Epaderm cream and ointment can be used in two ways, and the way it’s used will depend on what you’re using it for.

1. As an emollient – Apply a generous amount to your skin and rub it in the direction of your hair growth. Reapply as often as required.
2. As a skin cleanser – Lather a scoop of product in water and use it like normal soap.

You can also use Epaderm ointment as a bath additive. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Add 4g of product to a bowl of hot water.
2. Allow it to melt.
3. After the water has cooled, add the mixture to your bathtub
4. Proceed to bathe as you normally would.

How long does Epaderm take to work?

Epaderm can instantly hydrate dry skin, but for optimal results it should be applied frequently and used as a soap substitute or bath additive.
