Fucidin H is a topical cream typically prescribed to treat psoriasis, but it can also sometimes be prescribed to treat other skin conditions like eczema if your clinician thinks it might be helpful. Psoriasis and eczema are both skin conditions that can look similar, but there are subtle differences between them. Whilst they’re both characterised by red, dry, itchy skin, psoriasis is an autoimmune condition. This means that the symptoms are caused by your own immune system not working as it should, causing your skin cells to grow too quickly. Whereas the exact cause of eczema isn’t as well known, it’s thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Like Fucidin cream, it contains fusidic acid as an active ingredient, which is an antibiotic - meaning that it works to fight off bacterial infections on the skin.
But unlike Fucidin cream, Fucidin H also contains hydrocortisone acetate. Hydrocortisones are a type of steroid, which work to treat skin conditions by relieving irritation.
Often with skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, the skin can become infected as bacteria gets into the lesions caused by scratching. This can lead to further pain, discomfort and inflammation. The antibiotic ingredient that’s present in both Fucidin cream and Fucidin H blocks the bacteria on your skin from producing proteins that they need to sustain themselves. As a result, the bacteria stops spreading and your body’s immune system is able to kill off the infection.
The hydrocortisone present within Fucidin H helps to prevent inflammation and irritation in the infected area, which can make it a more effective treatment for your condition if your symptoms are a bit stronger.
There’s only one dose of Fucidin H. So if it doesn’t work to clear up your symptoms as you’d hoped, it might be worth getting in touch with your clinician to see if it’s worth trying a different treatment.
