What is Betacap scalp application used for?
Betacap is a steroid treatment available as a scalp application. It’s used to treat scalp conditions like psoriasis (scaly, pink, thickened skin patches) and seborrhoeic dermatitis (itchy, scaly skin patches on the scalp, face and chest).
Betacap, similar to other steroids, is also used ‘off-label’ to treat alopecia areata. ‘Off-label’ prescribing is when a treatment is used for something not officially approved but still backed by evidence, whether used alone or alongside other treatments.
Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss linked to the immune system, though its exact cause isn’t known. It can appear as one or more hair loss patches (called patchy alopecia areata), total scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis), or even hair loss all over the body (alopecia universalis).[1]Â The affected skin may be slightly reddened but otherwise appears normal. Short broken hairs (exclamation mark hairs) are frequently seen around the margins of expanding patches of alopecia areata.[2]
How does Betacap work for alopecia areata?
The active ingredient in Betacap scalp application is betamethasone valerate. It works in a similar way to other topical steroids. This is by influencing the behaviour of certain skin and immune cells, which can be helpful in conditions like alopecia areata.
To dive a bit deeper, alopecia areata is a type of hair loss linked to inflammation and immune system activity.[1]Â Steroids, like the one in Betacap scalp application, work by calming down the inflammation and slowing down your immune system’s responses. This helps prevent your body from attacking hair follicles and controls alopecia areata.
It’s important to understand though, that if you have alopecia totalis (total scalp hair loss), topical corticosteroids like Betacap are less effective. In this case, it’s best to have a discussion with your clinician to find a more suitable treatment plan for you. Also, while treatments for alopecia areata, including steroids, can help hair regrowth, they can’t cure the condition.[1]
What doses of Betacap scalp application are there?
Betacap scalp application is only available as a clear, colourless, slightly thickened liquid containing betamethasone valerate at 0.1%. It comes in 100 ml plastic bottles with a special nozzle applicator for easy, direct use on the scalp.
