What is Blephasol?

Blephasol is an easy-to-use micellar solution that you can use on your eyelids and lashes. It doesn’t contain preservatives, parabens or ethanol (alcohol). It’s designed to be gentle with your skin and eyes and efficient in removing any impurities, debris, make-up or excessive grease. Due to its cleansing properties, it can help with eye conditions like blepharitis.^[1]

Blepharitis is when your eyelids get inflamed, making them swollen and itchy. Symptoms, like soreness, gritty eyes, and crusts near your eyelashes, can come and go. You might also find your eyelids sticking together in the morning after you wake up.^[2]

It can happen due to infections or allergies. One reason could be an infection caused by skin parasites called Demodex mites. These mites are quite common on skin, but if there’s too many of them, they can lead to itchy, red and irritated eyelids, along with a feeling like something is in your eye (foreign body sensation). Eyelash dandruff is often a sign of a Demodex infection.^[2]

How does Blephasol work?

Blephasol is a watery (aqueous) solution that combines ingredients to create tiny clusters called micelles. These micelles have hydrophilic (water-attracting) and hydrophobic (water-repelling) parts. The hydrophobic part attaches to oils and impurities on your eyelids and eyelashes, while the hydrophilic part helps them mix with water.

Blephasol contains a range of active ingredients, all of which team up and contribute to its complex mode of action:

• Polysorbate 20 is an emulsifier, which works by forming micelles to mix with excess oily secretions.
• Poloxamer 184, also known as Pluronic L64, is a surfactant with the role of helping to dissolve oily secretions in water (which they wouldn’t normally be soluble in);^[3] it also has the advantage of being gentle on your skin.
• PEG 8 is another emulsifier that helps clean, hydrate and moisturise your skin.
• PEG 6 caprylic hydrates and lubricates your skin.
• Capryloyl Glycine has antimicrobial properties.
• Dipotassium and potassium phosphate, sodium hydroxide are used in cosmetic products to adjust their pH value and stop them from stinging your eyes.

What doses of Blephasol are there?

Blephasol micellar lotion is only available in one dose. It comes in a 100ml bottle with a squirt top. It’s a clear aqueous solution (liquid), free from fragrances, preservatives and alcohol. There’s also Blephasol Duo, which includes 100 lint-free pads alongside the 100ml eyelid cleansing solution.

How to use Blephasol

Remember to follow your clinician’s guidance when using Blephasol or any other medication. Nevertheless, using Blephasol aqueous micellar solution is easy and straightforward:

1. Apply a small amount of Blephasol solution to a cotton pad.
2. Wipe the pad gently onto your eyelid, on the lower inner eyelid and eyelashes. Keep your eyes closed while doing this.
3. Using a different cotton pad, repeat on your other eye if necessary.

You can use Blephasol solution twice a day in the morning and evening. And there’s no need to rinse your eyelids after you use it.

How long to use Blephasol for?

Our clinicians will give you detailed instructions on how to use Blephasol, based on your specific symptoms. But typically, you’ll be advised to use the wipes for four weeks. Either once a day (preferably in the evening) if you have milder symptoms, or twice a day (in the morning and evening) if your symptoms are more severe.

What should I do if I make a mistake when using Blephasol?

Using Blephasol shouldn’t cause you any problems, since it’s been specially designed for sensitive eyes and it’s generally well tolerated. However, if you experience any discomfort or notice unexpected symptoms, stop using it and ask our clinical team for advice.
