What is Dutasteride?

Dutasteride is a daily capsule used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). BPH is a condition where your prostate becomes enlarged, which then affects urination. It’s suitable for men with moderate to severe symptoms and can reduce your risk of urinary retention or needing prostate surgery later on.[1]

Dutasteride can be taken on its own, but it’s also sometimes used with another treatment, called tamsulosin. You’ll usually take it long-term to help manage symptoms over time.

How does Dutasteride work for BPH?

Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It works by stopping the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a more potent form of testosterone, and is what makes the prostate grow larger over time.[1]

By lowering DHT levels, dutasteride shrinks the prostate and improves urine flow. It also helps to ease pressure on your bladder and reduce symptoms like difficulty peeing, or frequently needing to pee.[1][2]

What doses of Dutasteride are there?

Dutasteride comes as a 0.5 mg oral capsule. It’s the standard dose for BPH, usually taken once daily.

How to take Dutasteride

Take one capsule at around the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. Swallow it whole, and don’t chew or open the capsule.

It’s important to take it for the amount of time specified by your doctor. Dutasteride builds up slowly in your body, and it can take a while to notice your symptoms improving.

How long does Dutasteride take to work?

Dutasteride takes a few months to build up in your system. You might start noticing improvements after 1–3 months, but it can take up to 6 months to feel the full benefits.[1][2]

You should keep taking it regularly even if you don’t feel changes straight away.[3]

What if I make a mistake while using Dutasteride?

If you miss a dose, just skip it and take the next one as normal. Don’t take an extra capsule to supplement a missed dose. If you accidentally take too much, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Can I use Dutasteride and Tamsulosin at the same time?

Answer:
Yes, you can take dutasteride and tamsulosin together. In some cases, this may be recommended by your clinician.

They work in different ways to ease the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Dutasteride shrinks the prostate over time by reducing levels of the hormone DHT, while tamsulosin relaxes the muscles around the bladder and prostate, which helps to make it easier to pee.

Taking them together may help to provide relief faster and more effectively, especially for men with more severe symptoms or larger prostates.[3]

Will I get side effects using Dutasteride?

Answer:
Like any medication, there is a risk of side effects, but not everyone gets them. The most common are:

  • Lowered sex drive

  • Difficulty getting or keeping an erection

  • Ejaculation problems (like less semen volume)

  • Larger or tender breasts


For some people, these effects can continue even after you stop the medication.[2]

Less commonly, dutasteride can cause mood changes including depression.[2]

Always tell your doctor if you notice anything unusual while taking it.

How well does Dutasteride work?

Answer:
Studies show that Dutasteride can help to shrink prostate size, ease issues with urination, and lower the risk of needing surgery. One large study found that over 4 years, dutasteride reduced the risk of BPH progression by 41% compared to a placebo.[1]

How does Dutasteride compare with Finasteride?

Answer:
Both dutasteride and finasteride are 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. The difference between them is that dutasteride blocks both types of the enzyme which creates DHT, whereas finasteride only blocks one. This means dutasteride reduces DHT levels in the blood by more than 90%, compared to around 70% with finasteride.[2]

However, the difference in how much they reduce prostatic DHT is relatively small: about 90% with finasteride compared to 99% with dutasteride.[4]

Some studies suggest dutasteride could be more effective for long-term prostate shrinkage, but they can have similar side effects. Your doctor will recommend the one that is right for you.
