Ispaghula husk (pronounced is-pag-yoo-la husk) is a natural laxative from the husks of the Plantago ovata plant. When taken with water, it forms a gel-like substance, making it easier to pass stool.
There are many reasons why constipation happens, such as inactivity, lack of dietary fibre and not drinking enough water. Most of the time constipation resolves on its own within a few days. But until then, it can be uncomfortable to live with. Ispaghula husk can provide relief by moving your stomach content through your digestive tract, easing symptoms of constipation.
Ispaghula husk is a bulk-forming laxative. So when it’s combined with water, it forms a thick gel-like substance that helps soften stools – helping them move more easily through your digestive tract. Increased stool mass also stimulates your muscles to contract, helping speed up bowel movements. [1]
Ispaghula husk is the outer bit of the seeds from the Plantago ovata plant. It’s a soluble fibre that dissolves in water and transforms into a gel-like substance, helping to treat constipation by increasing stool mass.
Dietary fibre is important for your digestive health. There are two main types of fibre: insoluble and soluble. While most fibre intake should come from insoluble sources (about 30 grams daily), six to eight grams should come from soluble sources like ispaghula husk.
Ispaghula husk is available in both granules and powder sachets. Depending on the brand, there are different flavours, like lemon and orange. Ispaghula husk also goes by the name psyllium husk or the brand name Fybogel.

How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Dissolve one sachet of Ispaghula husk in 150ml of water. Ensure it’s fully dissolved before drinking it immediately. Waiting any longer can cause the solution to thicken into a gel, making it harder to swallow. It’s also important to drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid blockages in your digestive tract.
The recommended dosage for constipation is one to two sachets a day, preferably taken in the morning and evening. This can be increased to a higher dosage if your clinician thinks it’s safe and right for you.
For constipation, it can take up to three days for the symptoms to be relieved. If you don’t notice any improvements after this time, contact your clinician for advice.
If you forget to take a dose, don’t worry, simply take it when you remember.
Don’t take more than you’ve been advised to. If you accidentally take more than the recommended dosage, drink lots of water throughout the day. If you experience vomiting or stomach cramps after a few days, contact your doctor immediately.
