What is Cimizt?

Cimizt is a combined pill containing two hormones that help to stop you getting pregnant. The hormones are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring oestrogen and progesterone, which control the menstrual monthly cycle.

Cimizt is one of a number of combined pills you can get to prevent you from becoming pregnant. The reason there are so many is because everyone is different and reacts to these hormones uniquely. Pills tend to contain slight differences in dosage level, and they may contain different hormones. Some are more weighted towards preventing side effects that you can get from oestrogen, while others towards preventing side effects from progesterone.

Cimizt sits right in the middle. So it’s a helpful alternative for women who get side effects from oestrogen or progesterone.

What is Cimizt used for?

Cimizt is a contraceptive pill. If you take it correctly, it’s over 99% effective at stopping pregnancy. It’s a reliable form of contraception that’s easily reversible. You can stop taking Cimizt any time if you want to get pregnant.

Some women find that taking combined pills like Cimizt can help with menstrual symptoms like heavy bleeding or period pain, and acne too.

How does Cimizt work?

Combined contraceptive pills work in three separate ways to provide a very high level of protection against pregnancy. This way, if one doesn’t work, there’s a fail safe.

Cimizt prevents an egg from being released by tricking the body into thinking it has already ovulated. Without an egg to fertilise, it’s impossible to get pregnant. In the unlikely event that this fails and an egg is released, it thickens the fluid at the entrance of the womb, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg. It also makes the lining of the womb less hospitable for an egg, so it can’t implant itself there.

How to take Cimizt

Cimizt is a 21-day pill. You’ll take one pill, once a day. This should be at the same time for 21 days continuously. After 21 days, you take a seven day break and then move onto the next pack and repeat.

It’s best to work taking the pill into your routine, so you’re less likely to forget it. For example, you might take it before going to bed or before you brush your teeth in the morning. As long as it’s something you do at around the same time every day of the week.

When should you start using Cimizt?

If you’re switching to Cimizt from a different pill, you should take your first pill the day after you finish the previous pack. When you switch pills, it’s best to use barrier contraception for a week afterwards so your body can get used to the hormones.

If you have not taken a hormonal contraceptive the previous month, it’s better to take the first pill on the first day of your period. This will mean you are immediately protected against pregnancy. If you’re starting the pill on any other day, then you’ll need to use extra protection, such as a condom, for the first week.

What to do if you miss a Cimizt pill

You’ve got a bit of leeway with Cimizt if you’re late remembering it. It’s not considered a missed pill if you take it within 12 hours, as its effectiveness won’t be any lower.

If you have missed your scheduled pill by more than 12 hours, your protection against pregnancy might be reduced. Simply take the pill you’ve missed as soon as you remember and the next one at the normal time, even if this means taking two on the same day. You should also use extra precautions, such as barrier contraceptives, for one week.

FAQ: Cimizt

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How effective is Cimizt?

Answer:
Cimitiz is over 99% effective, which means that out of 100 women taking the pill over the course of a year, less than one will get pregnant. Most people make the odd error, such as a late or forgotten pill. This can reduce protection to around 91%, which means less than one in ten women will fall pregnant within a year.

So to get the most protection from it, try to take Cimizt correctly as often as you can.

What dosages of Cimizt tablets are there?

Answer:
Cimizt 150/30 is the only dosage available. It’s a pretty common formulation that you can find in other pills, so be careful not to choose what is essentially the same medication under a different name if you’re having issues with it.

Gedarel 20, Munalea 20, Mercilon and Bimizza are very similar to Cimizt; they just contain less oestrogen. So if you get side effects like vaginal dryness, mood swings or low sex drive, you might be better on a lower oestrogen dose. There is also the mini pill, which contains no oestrogen, which some women find reduces or eliminates side effects.

Can you take Cimizt for acne?

Answer:
While Cimizt is not prescribed to treat acne as a first-line treatment, it can be helpful in moderate or severe cases. While it isn’t always effective at tackling acne, it has been shown to significantly improve it for many women.

If you've taken the pill before and had problems with acne, let us know. Our clinicians can talk to you about what your options are.

Taking Cimizt after pregnancy

Answer:
If you’re not breastfeeding, you can take Cimizt between 21 and 28 days after giving birth and be protected from pregnancy. During this initial 28 day period, and for the first seven days of taking the pill, you’ll need to use a barrier contraceptive to stay covered.

Breastfeeding mothers should not use the combined pill. The progestogen-only pill is more suitable. Check with your prescriber before starting the pill if you’ve just given birth.

Is Cimizt the same as Marvelon?

Answer:
Marvelon and Cimizt are clinically the same, which means they contain the same active ingredients in the same doses. The manufacturers who make them are different and the non-active ingredients may differ slightly as well. But essentially, they are the same pill.

There are many other treatments available, each with slightly different risks and benefits. Our clinical team can talk you through your options.
