Folliculitis is a condition that causes hair follicles to become swollen. It’s a common condition that looks very similar to acne, and it can affect any area of the body that grows hair.
It can go away on its own, but if it becomes infected, it can become sore, itchy, and swollen; if it worsens, it can develop into cellulitis (an infection of a large area of skin), cause hair loss, or cause permanent damage to the hair follicle.

Zineryt is a solution that’s typically used for acne, but can be used ‘off-label’ for other skin conditions like folliculitis. It contains two active ingredients - Erythromycin, an antibiotic that kills off bacteria, and zinc acetate, which can help repair skin damaged by folliculitis.
Zineryt tackles one of the most common root causes of folliculitis, which is usually the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (staph for short). By doing this, it reduces the potential of reinfection while helping to repair skin damage.
How does Zineryt work?
Zineryt works by targeting one of the main underlying causes of folliculitis - bacteria. Bacterial folliculitis is the most common form of folliculitis, estimated to cause over 80% of cases. It’s generally caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacteria present on everybody’s skin. Sometimes staph can get into the hair follicles and cause an infection.
Folliculitis looks a lot like acne. The infected area swells up and takes on a reddish hue, a lot like a pimple. Sometimes, it fills up with pus, resembling a whitehead surrounded by a red ring. If infection worsens, those spots can fill up with a lot of pus and transform into furuncles (boils) or carbuncles. The big difference between acne and folliculitis is that folliculitis causes itchy, uncomfortable skin.
Erythromycin, one of the active ingredients of Zineryt, works by reducing the amount of acne and folliculitis-causing bacteria on the skin. It also directly stops certain factors that attract inflammation-causing white blood cells. Zinc, the other active ingredient of Zineryt, works with erythromycin to not only help fight infection-causing bacteria but also lower the chances of developing resistance to the antibiotic and enhances its absorption into the skin. It also has wound healing properties.

How to use Zineryt for folliculitis
Zineryt is typically applied twice a day, as directed by your clinician. You won’t need to make up the solution, your pharmacist will have already done that for you.
Start by washing the affected area first. If you're planning to put on moisturiser or makeup, apply Zineryt first, then let it dry.
Zineryt comes in a bottle with a unique applicator pad. There's a cap protecting it – take it off just before use and secure it back after each use.
To use Zineryt, unscrew the cap, flip the bottle upside down, place the pad on the skin, and spread the solution over the entire affected area, including the surrounding skin. Pressing the pad a bit harder increases the solution flow.
The applicator should allow you to use just the right amount. But don’t worry if you accidentally use too much. Just blot off the excess with some tissue, and be careful it doesn't get into your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Try not to miss a dose of Zineryt, as this can slow down the healing process. Don’t double up on missed doses either - simply skip that dose and apply the next one as normal.
How long can you use Zineryt for?
Successful treatment of folliculitis can vary, depending on the severity of infection. Zineryt is normally prescribed for 10-12 weeks. Your clinician will guide you on how long you need to use Zineryt for.
Are there different forms of Zineryt?
Zineryt takes the form of a topical solution. It consists of a powder and a solvent that your pharmacist will make up before the treatment gets to you, leaving you with a lotion to be applied to the affected areas as directed. There is only one form of Zineryt.

How is Zineryt different to other treatments for folliculitis?
Answer:
Folliculitis can have a variety of root causes, which changes the treatment you might need.
The most forms of folliculitis are:
Bacterial folliculitis - typically caused by bacteria, specifically Staphylococcus aureus. If you have this type of folliculitis, Zineryt might be the best treatment for you.
Hot tub folliculitis. The clue is in the name with this one. It's a type of bacterial folliculitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. It thrives in poorly maintained hot tubs, saunas, or swimming pools.
Pseudofolliculitis barbae (razor bumps). Comes from frequent or improper shaving. This can lead to ingrown hairs that swell and turn red.
Malassezia folliculitis. It's caused by yeast. Common among adolescents, it's often mistaken for acne but doesn't get better with acne treatments.
Viral folliculitis. Caused by the herpes zoster or molluscum viruses, it's rare and usually pops up near cold sores.
Drug-induced folliculitis. Some medications, like corticosteroids, can bring on folliculitis as a side effect.
If you have the bacterial variety, your treatment will generally be in the form of a topical or oral antibiotic. Treatments of other forms of folliculitis can also include antifungal medications, other acne treatments, and application of antiseptic cleansers.
Are there alternatives to Zineryt?
Answer:
There are other topical antibiotics you can use, which might be prescribed depending on the severity of your infection. You could also use oral antibiotics. For relief from itching and pain, consider using warm compresses on the affected skin. You can also use antiseptic cleansers to try and keep the area bacteria free.
Your clinician can work with you to decide which treatment will be best for you.
Does Zineryt cause side effects?
Answer:
Like all medications, Zineryt can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them. Sometimes treatments like Zineryt can cause “purging”, where symptoms get worse initially before getting better. If you have any concerns or questions during your treatment, don’t hesitate to get in touch for advice.
If you notice a burning sensation or a rash after use that doesn’t go away after a few hours, stop using Zineryt and reach out to your doctor.
How long does it take Zineryt to work?
Answer:
Zineryt normally takes up to 10-12 weeks to heal your folliculitis. If you aren’t seeing any improvement by this point, reach out to your doctor to discuss your treatment.
How well does Zineryt work for folliculitis?
Answer:
Zineryt should work well to treat bacterial folliculitis. In a study involving 102 patients aged 13-25, two groups were formed. Group A used erythromycin alone, and Group B used a combination of erythromycin with zinc acetate in a topical gel for 3 weeks. The results showed that the gel with both erythromycin and zinc acetate was more effective in reducing the number and severity of acne lesions compared to erythromycin alone.
While folliculitis is different to acne, if you’re treating bacterial folliculitis (folliculitis caused by bacteria, usually staph), they’re both caused by bacteria that’s sensible to Zineryt (usually staph for folliculitis and Propionibacterium acnes for acne). This means that Zineryt is a trusted treatment for targeting the root cause of bacterial folliculitis.
Is Zineryt available on prescription?
Answer:
Zineryt is a prescription only medication, meaning it is not available to buy over the counter. As Zineryt is an antibiotic solution, a clinician needs to decide if it’s the most suitable treatment for you, and that you’re using it correctly to avoid antibiotic resistance.
