What is Chlorhexidine Mouthwash?

Chlorhexidine mouthwash can remove odour from your mouth and leave it feeling fresh. The active ingredient is chlorhexidine digluconate, which has antimicrobial properties that help get rid of bad breath.

When bacteria builds up in your mouth, it can lead to gum problems and halitosis. Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath.[1]
Although having bad breath isn’t always a medical concern, it can be embarrassing, affect your self-esteem or indicate a broader health problem.

How does Chlorhexidine Mouthwash work?

Chlorhexidine has antimicrobial properties against bacteria, viruses and fungi[2]
This means it can kill or stop the growth of microorganisms. The active ingredient, chlorhexidine digluconate, is a positively charged molecule. This attracts the negatively charged bacteria, resulting in the cell wall of the bacteria being damaged. This kills and stops the growth of bacteria. Chlorhexidine can also cling to teeth and mucous membranes for up to 12 hours. This prevents plaque-building bacteria from sticking to it, improving oral health. [3]

Chlorhexidine mouthwash can be used for many things. This includes:

  • bad breath (halitosis);
  • mouth infections;
  • mouth ulcers and oral thrush;
  • sore throat;
  • gum disease;

How to use Chlorhexidine Mouthwash

Chlorhexidine mouthwash is for oral use only, but take care not to swallow it. Follow the instructions below on how to use Chlorhexidine mouthwash:

  1. Fill half the cap with mouthwash.
  2. Rinse your mouth with the mouthwash for about one minute.
  3. After a minute has passed, spit it out.
  4. Use it twice a day.
  5. Avoid eating or drinking for 30-60 minutes after using it.

It’s recommended to use mouthwash twice a day. Once in the morning and once before going to bed.

What are the side effects of Chlorhexidine Mouthwash?

Answer:
As with all medicines, Chlorhexidine Mouthwash can cause side effects for some people, though they tend to subside over time.
Common side effects include:

  • dry mouth;

  • mild burning or tingling sensation in the mouth;

  • change of tongue colour; and:

  • stained teeth.


And here are some serious side effects to look out for:

  • swelling of the face, lip, tongue or throat;

  • red, itchy skin;

  • wheezing;

  • difficulty breathing;

  • feel faint or dizzy; and:

  • peeling in the inside of the mouth.


If you experience any of these serious side effects go to your nearest A&E immediately, as these can be signs of an allergic reaction.
