What is Primolut N?

Primolut N is a medication that’s used to mitigate negative side effects from your period. These include heavy or irregular periods, pain, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It can also be used to delay your period if you have a special event planned. ^[1]

Heavy and painful periods are inconvenient at best. In some cases, they can prevent you from participating in activities that are part of your routine. They are caused by hormone imbalances, fibroids, cancer, and other conditions.^[2]

How does Primolut N work?

The active ingredient in Primolut N is norethisterone, which is a derivative of the hormone progesterone. It’s a synthetic form of a hormone that is a normal part of the menstrual cycle.

Norethisterone can provide relief from heavy and painful periods because it mimics the naturally occurring progesterone in your body. It can prevent your uterine lining from building up as much each month, reducing the amount your body needs to expel each month during your period. As a result, it also decreases the need for the muscle contractions that cause pain when they loosen the thickened endometrium in your uterus during your period.

What doses of Primolut N are there?

Primolut N is available in only one dose containing 5 mg of norethisterone. If it isn’t providing adequate relief for your period symptoms, you should sign in to your account and send our clinician a message. They may suggest another treatment that will work better for you.

How to take Primolut N

Sticking to your Primolut N treatment plan is simple and straightforward. You will need to follow instructions based on whether you’re taking it to treat heavy periods or delay your period.

For heavy bleeding

• Take one Primolut N pill two or three times a day. Your clinician will let you know how many days you’ll need to take them for.
• You don’t need to take it with food, but you should drink water when you swallow it.
• Don’t chew, crush, or break Primolut N.

To delay your period

• Start taking Primolut N three days before your period is supposed to start.
• Swallow one whole pill three times a day for up to 14 days.
• Don’t tamper with Primolut N by breaking or cutting it.
• Your period should start two or three days after you stop taking Primolut N.

How long does it take Primolut N to work?

You must plan in advance for Primolut N to be effective. If you need to delay your period, you have to start taking it three days before your regular period. After you finish taking Primolut N, your period should start in about two to three days. If it’s to lighten your period, your clinicain will let you know when to take it and for how long.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Primolut N?

Most of the time, making a mistake whilst taking Primolut N isn’t a big deal. If you feel sick or have side effects after taking too much, speak to a clinician. You shouldn’t worry if you miss a dose of Primolut N. Don’t take a double dose to make up for it. Simply take your next dose on time and you should be fine.
