What is Lyrinel XL?

Lyrinel XL was an off-label treatment for hyperhidrosis, a condition that causes excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis can either affect only certain areas of the body or make you sweat all over. It might also change your skin health by changing the colour or texture, or even causing an infection. For some people, it can affect their confidence too.

Lyrinel XL is no longer available, but you can get the generic version of it called Oxybutynin. It works in the same way and is as effective.

How does Lyrinel XL work for hyperhidrosis?

Lyrinel XL contains Oxybutynin, which is a type of drug called an anticholinergic. Oxybutynin works by stopping the acetylcholinesterase (ACh) enzyme from activating This has been shown to lower the amount you sweat.

What doses of Lyrinel XL are there?

Lyrinel XL is discontinued, but the generic version of it, Oxybutynin, comes in 2.5mg and 5mg doses. comes in 5mg and 10mg dose tablets.

The usual dose to start on is one 5mg tablet a day. But if this doesn’t help your symptoms, let your clinician know.

How to take Lyrinel XL

You can’t get Lyrinel XL anymore. Instead, you’ll be recommended generic Oxybutynin.

To take Oxybutynin, swallow the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food.

How long does it take Lyrinel XL to work?

Oxybutynin, the active ingredient in Lyrinel XL, is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. But this doesn’t mean it will work straight away, it might take a couple of weeks to feel the full effects.

How is Lyrinel XL different from other treatments for hyperhidrosis?

The first treatments suggested for hyperhidrosis are often things like lifestyle changes and topical pharmacy medicines. For many people with hyperhidrosis, avoiding triggers and using stronger antiperspirants or foot powder isn’t enough to control symptoms.
