What is Eltroxin?
Eltroxin is a multi-dose branded treatment used to treat hypothyroidism. Eltroxin works to combat the common symptoms of a thyroid hormone deficiency. So it helps to alleviate fatigue, tiredness, and low moods, as well as stopping you from gaining weight and preventing depression.
How does Eltroxin work?
Hypothyroidism is caused by the thyroid gland not producing enough of a hormone called thyroxine. The hormone in Eltroxin, levothyroxine, makes up the thyroxine deficit, and so improves your metabolism and gives you more energy.
It gives you more energy by introducing a hormone called levothyroxine to your system. Levothyroxine works to improve your metabolism by filling in and covering for the lack of thyroxine.
If you have hypothyroidism, you’ll probably already know thyroxine as the hormone your body doesn’t produce enough of. When the thyroid gland fails to produce enough of this hormone, our metabolisms don’t work very well and cause our bodies all sorts of problems which can have a detrimental effect to your quality of life; that’s why it’s so important to seek effective treatment.
What doses of Eltroxin are there?
After a consultation with our clinician, you will be prescribed a dose of Eltroxin based upon your individual needs as determined by the results of your blood test. Evidence of a recent blood test will need to be provided to us before we provide any treatment for hypothyroidism. Alternatively, you can upload a copy of a previous prescription for hypothyroidism treatment. Eltroxin comes in doses of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Read more in our editorial policy.
How to take Eltroxin
- Take one pill or your prescribed dose first thing in the morning with water
- Take the pill at least 30 minutes before your breakfast
- It’s important not to take Eltroxin with food or caffeinated drinks as these interfere with how your body absorbs the medication.
How long does it take Eltroxin to work?
Eltroxin starts working immediately to improve the function of your thyroid gland, but it might take a few weeks for this to have a knock-on effect on your symptoms.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Eltroxin?
If you think you’ve made a mistake with your dosage and you feel unwell, it’s important to send our clinician a message so they can give you some advice. If you forget to take one dose, just take the missed pill when you remember, as long it’s not too close to your next scheduled dose. In this case, you should just take the next dose as normal to avoid doubling up and risking any side effects.
