How does Colpermin work?
Peppermint oil contains L- menthol, which is an antispasmodic. It stops spasming by blocking the calcium channels in the smooth muscles. This relaxes the muscles which helps ease abdominal pain, cramps and discomfort.
It also has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. By reducing inflammation and killing microorganisms which could make IBS symptoms worse, Colpermin can help relieve IBS symptoms (but the main mechanism of peppermint oil is the antispasmodic activity).
What doses of Colpermin are there?
Each Colpermin tablet contains 0.2ml of peppermint oil. It comes in a capsule with a coating that helps prevent it from breaking down until it reaches the small bowel. This allows it to have a local effect in the bowels (colon and small intestine), helping it to be more effective.

How to take Colpermin
Colpermin capsules should be taken with a glass of water. It's best to take one an hour before a meal. Make sure not to take it immediately after a meal and ensure not to eat a meal 30-60 minutes after taking it.
You can take up to one capsule three times a day or if your symptoms are severe, two capsules can be taken up to three times a day. Colpermin should be taken until your symptoms are resolved, which is typically within one to two weeks. If your symptoms persist, it can be taken for up to three months, but this should be under the supervision of a doctor. Tell your clinician if your symptoms don’t improve or continue to worsen, and they’ll suggest what to do next.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Colpermin?
If you forget to take a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at your normal scheduled time. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
If you accidently take more than the recommended dosage, contact your doctor or go to your local A&E department.
How long does Colpermin take to work?
The outer coating prevents absorption of peppermint oil, until it reaches the bowel, where it’s gradually released into the bloodstream. It takes a few hours for the effects to show, but may take up to 1-2 weeks to see the full effects.

How effective is Colpermin?

Peppermint oil has been found to be very effective at reducing discomfort commonly associated with IBS.
In one study, 178 patients affected by IBS were placed into two groups; one group (91 patients) received two capsules of Mintoil (peppermint oil) twice a day for three months, while the other group received a placebo (87 patients). By the end of the trial, the group using peppermint oil had significant improvements in their IBS symptoms. 97% of patients using peppermint oil showed improvement in gastroenteritis symptoms, including relief from nausea, abdominal pain, and altered bowel movements, when compared to the placebo group. Physical discomfort was also significantly reduced. The study concluded peppermint mint oil was an effective treatment at easing IBS symptoms.
Does Colpermin cause constipation or diarrhoea?

No, Colpermin is not known to cause constipation or diarrhoea, or alter movements in the bowel. Instead, it eases pain associated with IBS. But like all medicines, there are some side effects that might occur when taking Colpermin. These include:
heartburn;
acid reflux;
nausea and vomiting;
burning sensation in the mouth; or:
anal irritation.
How does Colpermin compare with Buscopan?
Answer:
Colpermin contains peppermint oil, an antispasmodic that relieves abdominal pain. Buscopan contains the active ingredient, hyoscine butylbromide, which is also an antispasmodic. Although both have antispasmodic properties, the way they work will be slightly different. As a result, you might find one to be more effective for you than the other.
Is Colpermin similar to any other drug?
