Chlorphenamine is a type of medicine called an antihistamine. It can help manage the symptoms caused by lichen planus, including itchiness, inflammation, and redness.

Chlorphenamine, also known as Chlorpheniramine, belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. When you have an allergic reaction your body releases a chemical called histamine, which causes symptoms like hay fever, runny nose, urticaria or hives, itchiness and rashes, redness, and allergic reactions to food. It’s known as a drowsy (sedating) antihistamine, so it can make you feel more sleepy and tired than other antihistamines.
Lichen planus is a skin condition that causes itchy, reddish-purple, raised, and flat bumps on the body. Chlorphenamine is used in addition to topical treatments to help relieve any itchiness. It’s available as a tablet or oral solution (syrup).
When your skin becomes itchy, inflamed and red, that usually means your immune system’s been triggered and you’re having an allergic reaction. Your immune system releases chemicals (histamine) and proteins (cytokines), which cause your skin to become irritated. Chlorphenamine works by binding to the histamine H1 receptor, which blocks the chemical and prevents it from working. This helps alleviate and prevent symptoms associated with allergic reactions.
Chlorphenamine is only available in 4 mg chlorphenamine maleate tablets. It’s also available as a syrup (in a strength of 2 mg per 5 ml) and a 10mg/ml solution for injection.
How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Read more in our editorial policy.
Follow the instructions given by your clinician for the best results, as they will tell you how much to take and how often.
To use Chlorphenamine:
Chlorphenamine is absorbed easily by the body, and the medication can start to work within half an hour to an hour. It usually lasts for four to six hours and has a half-life of 12–15 hours (the length of time it takes for half of the medicine to leave your system).
So it works quite quickly, and as it’s a drowsier antihistamine, it may be best to take it before you sleep to help with any itchiness that’s keeping you awake.
If you’ve forgotten to take a dose, don’t take a double dose to make up for the one you’ve missed. Just wait until the next time you’re supposed to take it. If you’ve taken too much, seek urgent medical attention immediately and don’t attempt to drive yourself.
