What is Cinnarizine?

Cinnarizine is a tablet that treats motion sickness. It stops nausea, so you can travel without any issues. You swallow Cinnarizine a couple of hours before you’re about to get in a vehicle, or do anything else that might trigger your motion sickness. Cinnarizine then protects you from feeling sick.

Motion sickness is a condition where people get nauseous in response to movement. People with motion sickness often experience it during travel, like in cars or trains. It’s caused by a mismatch between the visual input from your eyes and the movement cues taken from your inner ear. This friction can create nausea symptoms and sometimes vomiting.

How does Cinnarizine work?

Cinnarizine is a type of medication called a H1 antihistamine. These work by blocking the effects of histamines on H1 and ACh receptors in your brain. Histamines are a chemical made naturally in your body. When you have motion sickness, an overload of them seems to trigger the H1 and ACh receptors to affect your vestibular system, which controls balance.

First generation antihistamines like Cinnarizine stop your H1 and ACh receptors from affecting your vestibular system. So taking Cinnarizine blocks too much histamine from working in your brain and eases your motion sickness.^[1]

What doses of Cinnarizine are there?

Cinnarizine comes in 15mg tablets. For motion sickness, you’ll usually take two tablets, two hours before you’re due to travel. If you’re on a long journey, like a long flight, boat or car trip, you’ll then usually take another 15mg tablet every eight hours.

How is Cinnarizine different from other treatments for motion sickness?

If you’ve struggled with motion sickness for a while, you’ve probably tried a few things. Self-care methods for motion sickness like breathing slowly and opening windows can make symptoms easier to manage, but they often don’t get rid of them.

Is Cinnarizine similar to any other treatment?

Stugeron is a branded medication with the same active ingredient as Cinnarizine in the same dosage. So it should work in pretty much the same way. The main differences between Stugeron and Cinnarizine are the names, how it looks and the price. Because it’s a generic medication, Cinnarizine is often cheaper.

There are other first generation antihistamines used for motion sickness. The main one is Promethazine. Cinnarizine and Promethazine work in similar ways, because they’re part of the same group of drugs. They have different active ingredients though, so one may work better than another.

How effective is Cinnarizine?

Cinnarizine has shown to work well for many different forms of motion sickness. In a study on the effect of Cinnarizine on seasickness, 65% of people found a significant improvement in the symptoms after taking 50mg of Cinnarizine.^[2]

There are some self-care tips for motion sickness that can make Cinnarizine even more effective. If you’re in a car, try sitting in the front seat, or sit in the middle of the boat if you’re travelling by sea. Make sure to get lots of fresh air and try not to eat heavy or fatty foods. Ginger can also help ease nausea.
