Daktarin oral gel is a gel treatment for oral thrush. Oral thrush is a mouth infection that’s triggered by too much candida in your mouth, which is a yeast germ. Having a dry mouth, diabetes, anaemia, or using corticosteroid inhalers or smoking can all lead to oral thrush.
The active ingredient in Daktarin oral gel is miconazole, a powerful antifungal treatment. Miconazole works against fungal infections like oral thrush by stopping an enzyme called 14 alpha-sterol demethylase from working. This prevents the fungal cells from making a substance called ergosterol. The lack of ergosterol damages the membrane of the fungal cells, allowing them to be killed off by the immune system as well as stopping more fungal cells from growing.
This gets rid of fungal infections. Since oral thrush is caused by a fungal infection, Daktarin oral gel is effective at treating it. Because it’s a sticky gel, Daktarin oral gel also helps form a barrier over the affected area, allowing the miconazole to work.
Daktarin oral gel only comes in one strength. One gram of the gel contains 20mg of the active ingredient miconazole. The measuring spoon the treatment comes with provides 124 mg of miconazole per 5ml teaspoon. Your clinician will tell you how much Daktarin oral gel you should use a day. For most adults, it will be four half-teaspoons (2.5ml) a day.

Always use Daktarin oral gel as instructed by a clinician.
Daktarin oral gel is a powerful antifungal treatment, so you’ll often see an improvement within a day of using it. But you usually need a week to see its full effects. You should keep using Daktarin for as long as you have been prescribed it. This will often mean using it for up to seven days after all your symptoms have disappeared. This stops any remaining fungal cells from multiplying, so the infection won’t return.
If you forget to take Daktarin oral gel, have a snack and take it as soon as you remember. Setting alarms or using a reminder app on your phone can help you keep up with your doses. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, just skip the missed dose and carry on with your course of treatment as normal.
Don’t take a double dose of medication to make up for missing one. If you accidentally take too much Daktarin, or you swallow a large amount, seek medical attention. Remember that Daktarin oral gel is very sticky. Don’t apply it straight to the back of the throat, and talk to your clinician before taking it if you have problems swallowing. There may be other options more suitable for you, like Nystatin oral suspension.
