Daktarin oral gel is a gel treatment for oral thrush. Oral thrush is a mouth infection that’s triggered by too much candida in your mouth, which is a yeast germ. Having a dry mouth, diabetes, anaemia, or using corticosteroid inhalers or smoking can all lead to oral thrush.
How does Daktarin oral gel work?
The active ingredient in Daktarin oral gel is miconazole, a powerful antifungal treatment. Miconazole works against fungal infections like oral thrush by stopping an enzyme called 14 alpha-sterol demethylase from working. This prevents the fungal cells from making a substance called ergosterol. The lack of ergosterol damages the membrane of the fungal cells, allowing them to be killed off by the immune system as well as stopping more fungal cells from growing.
This gets rid of fungal infections. Since oral thrush is caused by a fungal infection, Daktarin oral gel is effective at treating it. Because it’s a sticky gel, Daktarin oral gel also helps form a barrier over the affected area, allowing the miconazole to work.
What doses of Daktarin oral gel are there?
Daktarin oral gel only comes in one strength. One gram of the gel contains 20mg of the active ingredient miconazole. The measuring spoon the treatment comes with provides 124 mg of miconazole per 5ml teaspoon. Your clinician will tell you how much Daktarin oral gel you should use a day. For most adults, it will be four half-teaspoons (2.5ml) a day.

How to use Daktarin oral gel
Always use Daktarin oral gel as instructed by a clinician.
If you’re using Daktarin oral gel for the first time, pierce the tube with the cap. If the seal is already broken, don’t use it.
Use the gel after eating. This will help the medication work on the infection for longer
If your infection is just in the mouth, use a clean finger and apply it to the area.
If your mouth and throat are affected, take the medicine into your mouth and throat with your lips. Try not to swallow for as long as possible.
If you wear dentures, rub them with the gel when you take them out at bedtime. This can stop them from carrying the infection.
How long does it take Daktarin oral gel to work?
Daktarin oral gel is a powerful antifungal treatment, so you’ll often see an improvement within a day of using it. But you usually need a week to see its full effects. You should keep using Daktarin for as long as you have been prescribed it. This will often mean using it for up to seven days after all your symptoms have disappeared. This stops any remaining fungal cells from multiplying, so the infection won’t return.
What should I do if I make a mistake when using Daktarin oral gel?
If you forget to take Daktarin oral gel, have a snack and take it as soon as you remember. Setting alarms or using a reminder app on your phone can help you keep up with your doses. If it’s nearly time for your next dose, just skip the missed dose and carry on with your course of treatment as normal.
Don’t take a double dose of medication to make up for missing one. If you accidentally take too much Daktarin, or you swallow a large amount, seek medical attention. Remember that Daktarin oral gel is very sticky. Don’t apply it straight to the back of the throat, and talk to your clinician before taking it if you have problems swallowing. There may be other options more suitable for you, like Nystatin oral suspension.

Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
How is Daktarin oral gel different from other treatments for oral thrush?
Daktarin oral gel is the only treatment for oral thrush which contains miconazole. It’s also the only treatment for oral thrush which comes as a gel treatment.
There are two other commonly used treatments for oral thrush, Nystatin oral suspension and Nystan oral suspension. But both of these contain the active ingredient nystatin, which is less effective for oral thrush than miconazole treatments like Daktarin oral gel. They are also liquids rather than gels, so they may not work as effectively as they don’t seal to the affected area.
Is Daktarin oral gel similar to any other treatments?
There are other treatments for fungal infections that contain miconazole. Daktarin also comes as a cream, a powder and a spray. But none of these are made for oral infections like Daktarin oral gel. Daktarin cream is used for fungal infections of the skin and nails, Daktarin powder is used for fungal infections of the skin and Daktarin spray is made especially for athlete’s foot.
How effective is Daktarin oral gel?
A review of seventeen randomised controlled trials found that miconazole-based treatments were effective and safe for oral thrush. It was considered more effective than nystatin treatment. Daktarin oral gel also seemed to be more effective long term. There is not a lot of resistance to miconazole-based treatments, so they may be a better choice than others like fluconazole. As Daktarin oral gel is only applied topically, it’s also safer to use long-term than antifungal tablets.
Do I need a prescription for Daktarin oral gel?
Daktarin oral gel is a pharmacy medication. This means that you don’t need a prescription to get it, but you can’t buy it over the counter either. You’ll need to have a chat with a pharmacist and buy it from a registered pharmacy. This is just to make sure it’s right for you to use.
