What is Otomize?

Otomize is an ear spray which helps treat ear conditions like otitis externa (OE), also known as swimmer’s ear. OE is the inflammation and infection of the ear. It can last up to six weeks if acute and more than three months if chronic.

Topical antibiotics, like Otomize, are usually the first-line treatment. Otomize contains three active ingredients, which work together to reduce inflammation and prevent infection.

How does Otomize work?

Otomize contains three different active ingredients which work together to treat otitis externa.

• Dexamethasone. A steroid that reduces your immune system's response, helping lower inflammation.
• Acetic acid. Which helps lower the pH in your ear canal, creating a more acidic environment. The acidic conditions are too harsh for bacteria to grow and multiply, resulting in their eventual death. This helps treat and prevent infection. It can also help remove inflammatory debris.
• Neomycin sulfate. An antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis.

Together they reduce swelling and inflammation of the ear while also preventing and treating bacterial infection.

What does Otomize treat?

Otomize is taken to treat infections of the ear. It shouldn't be taken for ear wax blockages or blocked ears. Blocked ears are usually caused by excess ear wax, but in some cases they can be a symptom of OE. If you have excess ear wax or blocked ears, try to break it down using over-the-counter ear drops or olive oil first. If that doesn't work, you might have an ear infection and it’s best to ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice.

How to use Otomize

Before using a new bottle of Otomize, shake it well and press the pump down several times until a fine spray comes out. Each spray/pump is equivalent to one dose. If you haven’t used Otomize for more than a week, press the pump down until you get a fine spray. To use Otomize:

• Shake well
• Place the tip of the nozzle of the ear inside your ear
• Press the pump once
• Repeat the steps three times a day or as advised by your clinician

You’ll typically use it for about a week. If your symptoms haven’t improved after this, message our clinician online. Even after your symptoms improve, continue using it for at least two days or as long as you’ve been advised to. This is to make sure your infection doesn’t return.

How long does Otomize take to work?

You should see improvement in your infection and reduction in inflammation within a couple of days. However, if seven days have passed and you still have symptoms, stop using it and seek medical advice from your clinician.
