What is Flomaxtra XL?

Flomaxtra XL is a tablet that’s mainly used to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate. You usually take it continuously, once a day. Enlarged prostate, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition that mostly affects men over the age of 50, and it becomes more common the older you get. It isn’t a major health concern, but it can cause you to have trouble urinating, which can cause distress or embarrassment and affect your mental health.^[1]

Because some men find it embarrassing, or simply accept it as a part of aging, the symptoms of BPH or an overactive bladder can often go untreated. But medications such as Flomaxtra XL have been proven to help with urinary troubles, which can increase your quality of life and reduce the risks of you developing urinary tract infections.

How does Flomaxtra XL work?

Tamsulosin, the active ingredient in Flomaxtra XL, belongs to a class of medications called alpha blockers. Alpha blockers work by relaxing the muscles around your bladder and prostate gland, which makes it easier for you to urinate as there’s less pressure being applied to your bladder.

Because it only relaxes the muscles around your prostate gland rather than shrinking it, you’ll need to continue to take Flomaxtra XL daily in order for it to work. It only helps your symptoms for a certain amount of time – so once you stop taking it, it’s very likely that your symptoms will reappear.

What doses of Flomaxtra XL are there?

Flomaxtra XL is only available in one dose: 400 mcg, which you’ll usually take once a day. If this dose isn’t working as you’d hoped, let your clinician know. They may recommend adjusting your treatment.

How is Flomaxtra XL different from other treatments for enlarged prostate?

Answer:

Flomaxtra XL belongs to a category of drugs named alpha blockers, of which there are a few. Aside from alpha blockers, you might also be prescribed a type of medicine known as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.

Examples of this type of medicine include finasteride and dutasteride. If you’re not sure which type of treatment might suit you best, ask our clinician, they should be able to give you a recommendation after asking you about your health and symptoms.

Some people find that a combination of these two types of medicines can help with their symptoms if neither of them are working on their own.

Is Flomaxtra XL similar to any other treatments?

As well as other alpha blockers such as alfuzosin and doxazosin - which will work in similar ways but contain different active ingredients - there are quite a few different brands of treatments that use tamsulosin as their only active ingredient, such as Faramsil. These treatments will work in pretty much the same way as Flomaxtra XL to treat your symptoms, but they’ll be branded differently and may differ in cost.

How effective is Flomaxtra XL?

Answer:

Tamsulosin, the key ingredient in Flomaxtra XL, has demonstrated itself as an effective long-term treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with BPH. In a six-year study, 80.7% of the patients who used 400mcg of tamsulosin once-daily found it to have a consistent positive effect on their symptoms - without developing tolerance to it.^[1]
