What is Elocon?

Elocon is an effective topical steroid that can help treat and manage inflammatory conditions, such as dermatitis. Dermatitis is a general name for conditions that cause skin inflammation, such as seborrheic dermatitis and eczema. When the inflammation becomes severe, steroids are often required to treat it.

Steroids are anti-inflammatory medications that can help reduce symptoms like swelling, redness and itching. The exact way they work isn’t understood yet, but some suggest it can stop the activation of proinflammatory cells.[1]

How does Elocon work?

Symptoms of dermatitis often include swelling, raised bumps, itching and redness. Mometasone furoate, the active ingredient in Elocon, can help tackle these symptoms. Although the exact way it works is unknown, some studies have shown it can activate pathways that can reduce inflammation. For example, they can do this by inhibiting the activation of mast cells, which are responsible for inflammation.[1]

What doses of Elocon are there?

There’s only a 0.1% dose of Elocon available, but you can get it as a cream, ointment, or a scalp lotion. The main difference between them is that the ointment is thicker and oilier, making it more suitable for dry skin and the scalp solution is (as the name suggests) for use on the scalp only. Other than that, there isn’t much of a difference between them.

How to use Elocon

Elocon cream or ointment
To use Elocon, apply a thin layer of cream or ointment to the affected area once a day. It’s best to apply it at the same time each day. Your clinician will decide how long you’ll use Elocon for, depending on the severity of your condition and where your symptoms are. If you’re using it on your face, don’t use it for more than five days.

Elocon scalp lotion
Apply a few drops of the lotion once a day to the affected area of your scalp and gently rub it in until it’s fully absorbed into your skin.

Your hair can be dry or wet when you apply the treatment.

How long does Elocon take to work?

You should start to see some improvement in your skin within two weeks of continuous use. If after this time you see no improvement, contact your clinician online.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Elocon?

If you accidentally use more than advised, contact your local doctor for advice as it can interfere with hormone levels.

If you forget to apply a dose, use it as soon as you remember, unless it is time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and carry on using it as before.

When using Elocon, you shouldn’t stop using it unless your clinician tells you to. This is because if you suddenly stop using the cream, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as redness and stinging. To avoid this, ask your clinician if you want to stop and they’ll gradually reduce your dosage.
