What is Curatoderm?

Curatoderm contains tacalcitol, a vitamin D analogue. It’s often used as a first-line treatment for psoriasis and comes in two forms: an ointment and a lotion. The lotion is mainly used for scalp psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by an overactive immune system. This causes the overproduction of keratinocytes (cells that produce keratin), resulting in rough, inflamed, and red skin. There’s no cure for psoriasis, so instead treatments focus on improving and managing your symptoms.^[1]

How does Curatoderm work?

Tacalcitol, the active ingredient in Curatoderm, is a vitamin D analogue. It works by normalising your production of keratinocytes (cells that produce keratin), which are overproduced in psoriasis. It does this by binding to the vitamin D receptors on your skin and immune system to slow down their production.^[2] This lessens thick, dry scales on psoriatic skin and reduces inflammation.

How to use Curatoderm

Always follow the instructions given to you by your clinician to ensure safe use. Your clinician will tell you how long you’ll need to use it. Don’t use it for longer than the recommended time. There are two forms of Curatoderm: lotion and ointment.

To use Curatoderm Lotion:

• Apply it to the affected area once a day.
• Gently rub it in.
• Wash your hands after application.
• Don’t use more than 10ml a day.
• It’s recommended to apply it before you go to sleep.

If you’re using it on your scalp:

• Part your hair.
• Apply a few drops to the affected area.
• Gently rub it in.

To use Curatoderm Ointment:

• Apply it to the affected area once a day.
• Spread the ointment thinly.
• Wash your hands after application.
• Don’t use more than 10 grams a day.
• It’s recommended to apply it before you go to sleep.
• If you’re using it on your scalp, you can wash it off with shampoo the next day.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Curatoderm?

If you forget to use it, don’t worry — just apply it when you remember (unless it’s close to your next scheduled dose). If it is, just skip the missed dose and carry on as normal. Don’t apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If you accidentally use more than you should it can alter the calcium levels in your body, so contact your doctor for medical advice if you do.

How long does Curatoderm take to work?

It will take a couple of weeks to see improvements in your symptoms. You may notice your scaling and flaky skin reduces first, and after a couple more weeks you should notice your redness lessen.
