Medrone Methylprednisolone

What is Medrone?

Medrone is an oral steroid that helps manage and control severe eczema flare-ups. It produces anti-inflammatory effects to provide fast relief from symptoms. It’s similar to Prednisolone, a popular treatment for severe eczema. The difference between the two is that Medrone is much stronger than prednisolone.

Although eczema is typically treated with topical steroids and emollients, severe refractory eczema (a very severe form of eczema) you may need treatment with a stronger medication, such as an oral steroid. Oral steroids are used off-label for eczema, but can be highly effective, and tend to only be recommended in severe cases when other options haven’t worked. This is because they can cause serious side effects if used for a long time or in high doses.

How does Medrone work?

As with all steroids, methylprednisolone has anti-inflammatory effects that help reduce inflammation, redness, and irritation. It specifically works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in your body to form a complex. The complex then moves to the nucleus where it alters gene expression to block pro-inflammatory molecules and activate anti-inflammatory molecules.

Or to put it more simply, Medrone calms your immune system down to prevent an overactive inflammatory response, which causes eczema.[1]
This helps reduce the severity of your symptoms.

What doses of Medrone are there?

There are three doses of Medrone: 2mg, 4mg, 16mg and 100mg. Your daily dosage will be decided by your doctor depending on the severity of your condition, but you’ll usually start on the lowest dose first. Medrone can also be taken by intravenous injection, which is primarily used in hospital settings for treating other inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

How to take Medrone

Your clinician will decide your dose, which can vary depending on the severity of your condition. Generally, you’ll start on the lowest dose possible, unless your doctor decides to give a high dose initially to get your condition under control.

When taking the tablet, make sure to take it whole with water. And if you need to take multiple tablets a day, your clinician will let you know whether they need to be taken all at once or spread out across the day.

Don’t eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice when taking your treatment, as this can increase the concentration of methylprednisolone in your body.

If you need to take Medrone for longer than three weeks, your clinician will need to issue you with a steroid treatment card. This card details the steroid you’re using, so in case of any emergency, another doctor will know not to abruptly stop your treatment. It’s important you carry this card with you everywhere for your own safety.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Medrone?

If you accidentally take more medicine than prescribed, contact your local A&E department straight away for medical attention.

If you forgot to take a dose, skip the missed dose and carry on with your normal dosing schedule. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one. You should also contact your clinician to let them know about the missed dose.

How long does Medrone take to work?

It’s different for everybody, but typically it can take anywhere from a few days to weeks for Medrone to improve your symptoms. It depends on the concentration, dosage and severity of your condition.

Can I stop Medrone anytime?

No, it’s important you only stop taking Medrone when your clinician tells you to. Stopping early or abruptly can cause steroid withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms include itchy skin, fever, joint pain and more. To prevent this from occurring, your clinician will make sure to gradually reduce your dose.

How is Medrone different from other treatments for severe eczema?

Answer:
There’s no actual cure for severe eczema; instead, treatment aims to reduce its severity and help you manage your symptoms and reduce flare-ups. For severe cases, clinicians typically recommend potent topical steroids like Dermovate initially. If topical steroids show no improvement, the next options include topical calcineurin inhibitors, followed by oral steroids.

Examples of oral steroids include Medrone (methylprednisolone) and Prednisolone, a stronger version of prednisone. Additionally, antihistamine tablets may be suggested by your clinician to help alleviate symptoms such as itchiness.

Do I need a prescription for Medrone?

Answer:
Yes, like most steroids, you’ll need a prescription from a clinician. This is because oral steroids are strong drugs that should only be taken if needed. If your symptoms are severe, your clinician will suggest an alternative treatment that's right for your condition. This will make sure you're only getting treatment that's safe and suitable for you.

What are the side effects of Medrone?

As with all medications, when taking Medrone there is a risk of getting side effects. Common ones include stomach pain, bleeding from the back passage, blood-stained stool, vomiting and infections. If you suffer from any of these side effects or the ones mentioned in the PIL, don’t stop taking Medrone suddenly as this could cause withdrawal symptoms. Instead, let your clinician know and they’ll help you gradually decrease your dose.
