Itraconazole is an oral antifungal medicine. It treats tinea versicolor, a skin condition caused by Malassezia (a yeast). Malassezia is part of every healthy body, but when it turns pathogenic (disease-causing), it can result in skin discolouration. On lighter skin, this will be presented as hyperpigmented (darker) skin, and on darker skin, it will be hypopigmented (lighter). This can get confused with vitiligo, so it's better to get diagnosed by a doctor before starting treatment.
Tinea versicolor is usually treated with topical antifungals, such as creams or gels you apply directly to the affected area. However, if the condition is widespread and recurrent, Itraconazole can be prescribed instead.
Itraconazole belongs to a group of antifungals called triazoles. It works by stopping the growth of fungi by inhibiting the production of ergosterol, a component of their cell membrane. Without ergosterol, the cell’s membrane stops working properly, which causes its contents to leak out. As a result, the fungus cannot grow and spread.
How we source info.
When we present you with stats, data, opinion or a consensus, we’ll tell you where this came from. And we’ll only present data as clinically reliable if it’s come from a reputable source, such as a state or government-funded health body, a peer-reviewed medical journal, or a recognised analytics or data body. Read more in our editorial policy.
To take itraconazole, swallow it with a liquid straight after a meal.
Acidity in the stomach is needed for the capsule to work. If you’re taking medicine for indigestion, stomach ulcers or heartburn, take them 2 hours after taking Itraconazole. However, if you have to take medication that affects the production of stomach acid, take itraconazole with an acidic drink, like coke or orange juice.
Depending on the condition, the dosage can vary. For tinea versicolor, it’s typically two capsules (200mg) for seven days. Our clinician will decide the dose and length of the treatments, and even if you think you’re better, continue taking it till the end of the treatment course.
