Testavan is a topical gel that contains testosterone, a male hormone that your body produces naturally. Sometimes men don’t produce enough natural testosterone, and Testavan can help replace this ‘lost’ testosterone, bringing it back up to a normal level.
How does Testavan work?
When you apply Testavan gel to your skin, it’s absorbed into your bloodstream which carries it around your body. This helps to replace ‘lost’ testosterone if your body isn’t producing enough. This is why it’s sometimes called HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or TRT (testosterone replacement therapy).
As your testosterone levels increase, it can relieve symptoms of low testosterone – like:
Lowered libido
Decreased muscle mass
Decreased facial hair
Low bone density
Dry, thin skin
Erectile dysfunction
Depression
Mood swings
Difficulty concentrating
Trouble sleeping
Irritability
What doses is Testavan available in?
Testavan comes in one dose, which contains 20 mg of testosterone per gram of gel. The amount you take each day will depend on your clinician’s instructions – but it’s typically one, two, or three pump presses each day.

How to use Testavan
You should always follow your clinician’s instructions when applying Testavan. Usually, you’ll start by applying one pump of Testavan to your upper arms or shoulders once per day – around the same time each day if you can. However, if your symptoms are more severe, if one pump per day isn’t helping to manage your symptoms, or if the level of testosterone in your blood is very low, your clinician may increase your dose up to three pumps per day.[1]
To apply your Testavan gel:
Find a clean, dry, healthy patch of skin on your upper arm or shoulder that can be covered by a t-shirt.
Remove the applicator from the top of the pump.
Take the lid off the applicator.
Point the nozzle of the pump towards the flat surface of the applicator.
Press the pump all the way down once to release the gel onto the applicator.
Use the flat surface of the applicator to spread the gel evenly over the chosen area of skin.
Clean up any excess or spills with a tissue, and make sure to dispose of the tissue safely to prevent any exposure to others.
If you need to apply a second pump, repeat steps 4-7 on your other upper arm.
If you need to apply three pumps, first repeat steps 4-7 on your other upper arm, then repeat steps 4-7 on the first upper arm again.
After you’re done, clean the applicator with a tissue and dispose of it safely to prevent any exposure to others.
Wash your hands with soap and water right away.
Testavan gel is flammable until it dries, so make sure to avoid smoking or going near any open flames until it’s completely dry. You should also wait until the application site is fully dry before getting dressed, to stop any gel from rubbing off.
Make sure to keep the area where you applied Testavan covered with clothing to prevent accidentally transferring Testavan to others. You should wait at least two hours before showering, swimming, or bathing to give the gel a chance to be absorbed into your bloodstream.
If you’re going to be in a situation where skin-to-skin contact of your application site with someone else is likely to happen, make sure to wash the site with soap and water beforehand.
How long does it take for Testavan to work?
Testavan will start being absorbed into your bloodstream as soon as you apply your medicine. But it can take a few months before the levels of testosterone in your blood build up enough to relieve your symptoms. Studies show that after 3 months of treatment with testosterone gel, 85.5% of men with low testosterone had their testosterone increase to a normal level.[2]
What should I do if I make a mistake taking Testavan?
If you accidentally apply too much Testavan, wash the application site with soap and water as soon as possible. You may experience symptoms like irritability, nervousness, weight gain, or frequent and long lasting erections if you use too much Testavan.
If you forget to apply Testavan when you normally would, if it’s more than 12 hours until your next dose, you can apply the missed one as soon as you remember. But if it’s less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the one you missed and carry on as normal from the upcoming dose. Never apply a double dose of Testavan to make up for missing one.

FAQ: Testavan
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Are there any alternatives to Testavan?
Answer:
Yes. Tostran is another branded gel that contains 20 mg of testosterone per gram of gel. This means it works in exactly the same way as Testavan.
The main differences between Tostran and Testavan are that you’ll apply Tostran to your thighs or abdomen instead of your upper arms and shoulders, and that Tostran doesn’t come with an applicator. The starting and maximum doses of Tostran are also a little higher than Testavan. This means Tostran could be a good alternative if your testosterone levels are very low, or if you prefer to wear clothing that doesn’t cover your upper arms or shoulders.
How effective is Testavan?
Answer:
Testavan has proven to be an effective treatment for low testosterone in clinical trials. In one study involving 159 men with low testosterone, 76.1% of men reached average testosterone levels after 90 days of treatment with Testavan.[1] Another study involving 180 men found that 85.5% of men reached average testosterone levels after 3 months of treatment.[2]
Do I need a prescription for Testavan?
Answer:
Yes, you’ll need a prescription to use Testavan. A clinician will need to check your testosterone before you use it, so they can be sure Testavan is the right treatment for you (and that you’re using the right dosage). Testavan also comes with some risk of side effects, and you may need additional monitoring while you’re using it to make sure the dose you’re on is right for you.
Does Testavan build muscle?
Answer:
Yes, Testavan gel can help increase muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, and strength in men with low testosterone levels.[3] It works by increasing protein synthesis, the process in which your body incorporates amino acids into muscle proteins to repair and grow muscle tissue.[4]
Can Testavan cause side effects?
Answer:
Like any medicine you use, Testavan comes with some risk of side effects (but not everyone will get them). The most common Testavan side effects, which can affect up to 1 in 10 people, include:
Irritated skin at the application site
High levels of fats (triglycerides) in your blood
Increased blood pressure
Increased prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by the prostate that can be used
to detect prostate problems
Increased red blood cell count
This isn’t a comprehensive list of all of Testavan’s side effects. If you’ve got any questions or concerns, speak to your healthcare provider, or take a look at the patient information leaflet.
