What is Alexi?

Alexi is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. It comes as a sachet you dissolve in water, and you only need to take one dose to clear it.

UTIs are one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide. Most UTI cases are uncomplicated, and don’t always need treatment as they can resolve on their own.[1] But taking antibiotics like Alexi can speed up the treatment process and improve your symptoms quicker.

How does Alexi work?

Alexi contains fosfomycin, which is an antibiotic that kills many bacteria including E.coli, the most common cause of UTIs. It works by inhibiting the enzymatic reaction that produces peptidoglycan – an important component in making bacterial cell walls.[2] Without a cell wall, bacteria cannot grow and reproduce.

Furthermore, fosfomycin stops the bacteria from sticking to your urinary cell walls. Normally bacteria adhere to multiply, leading to infections. But without this, the bacteria can be easily excreted through urine, reducing the likelihood of infections.[2]

How to take Alexi for UTIs

To treat uncomplicated UTIs, only one sachet and dose is needed. To take it, follow the instructions below.

  • Take the medication on an empty stomach. It’s best to take it before going to bed after emptying the bladder.
  • Pour the granules into a glass containing 50-75ml of water. Dissolve the contents by stirring
  • After it’s dissolved, drink it immediately.

If you accidentally took more than the recommended amount, contact your doctor or pharmacist for medical guidance.

Are there different doses of Alexi?

There’s only one dose of Alexi available, a 3g sachet. Usually only one dose is needed to clear the infection.

How is Alexi different from other treatments for UTIs?

Answer:
Unlike other antibiotics, Alexi is taken in liquid form, and only for one day. This could be better for you if you struggle to swallow tablets and don't like long treatment plans. Alexi is most similar to Monuril, as both treatments contain the same active ingredients in the same form. The only real difference between the two is their name and the company that produces them. They may also differ in appearance and price.

Other antibiotics for UTIs include MacroBID and Selexid. They come as tablets containing different active ingredients and are taken for a different number of days. (Selexid is a 3-day course and MacroBID is a 7-day course.)

Trimethoprim is another liquid antibiotic. It’s suitable for children or people who have difficulty swallowing tablets. For adults, the recommended dosage is four 5ml spoonfuls taken twice daily.

The one you choose is mostly up to you, but antibiotics work differently from person to person, depending on the type of bacteria you have. For example, if you have bacteria resistant to fosfomycin, Alexi won't be effective for you.

What are the side effects of Alexi?

Answer:
As with all antibiotics, Alexi can cause side effects that might affect some people. Common side effects include:

  • headaches or dizziness;

  • diarrhoea;

  • nausea;

  • indigestion or abdominal pain;

  • infection of the female genital organs.
