What is Monuril?

Monuril is an oral antibiotic that treats urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women. UTIs are a common infection in women, with 40-50% of them getting it at least once in their lifetime.[1] Typically UTIs are uncomplicated and can resolve on their own, but treating them with antibiotics can improve your symptoms more quickly.

How does Monuril work?

Monuril contains the active ingredient Fosfomycin, which is an antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the enzymatic process involved in bacterial cell wall production. Without a cell wall, bacteria cannot survive.[2]

Additionally, bacteria normally sticks to the urinary cells when it causes infections. But fosfomycin reduces the adherence of bacteria to the urinary tract wall. Without this, the bacteria is easily excreted through urination.[2] This helps to clear your infection and reduce your symptoms.

What doses of Monuril are there?

There’s only one dose available for Monuril, a 3g sachet. It comes as granules that are poured into a cup and dissolved in liquid. Usually, only one sachet is required to treat the infection.

How to take Monuril

To take Monuril, follow the directions below.

  • Make sure to take Monuril on an empty stomach, preferably before going to bed. Food can disrupt the absorption of fosfomycin, worsening its effects.
  • Pour one 3g sachet of Monuril into a glass of water (50-75 ml) and stir until it’s completely dissolved.
  • Drink the mixture straight away.

How long does it take for Monuril to work?

Monuril works relatively quickly to clear UTIs. If you have an uncomplicated UTI, only one dose is needed for your infection to clear within 24-72 hours.

What happens if I take too much Monuril?

Taking too much of an antibiotic isn’t usually harmful. But to be on the safe side, contact your doctor or seek medical assistance if you accidentally take more than one sachet.

How does Monuril compare to other treatments for UTIs?

Answer:
Antibiotics are the standard treatment for UTIs. Each antibiotics can have different active ingredients and can be taken differently. Monuril and Alexi are similar options, as they both come in sachets of dissolvable granules. Only one dose (one sachet) of them is usually needed to treat your UTI, making them ideal for people who cannot swallow tablets (or simply prefer not to take them).

Trimethoprim is another option. It, too, can be taken in liquid form. It's better for younger patients or those who find tablets hard to swallow. The typical dosage for adults is four 5ml spoonfuls, twice a day.

Other antibiotics include MacroBID and Selexid. Both of which are antibiotic tablets (but with different active ingredients). Treatment with Selexid lasts three days, but for Macrobid it lasts seven days.

When it comes to antibiotics, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. This means if one works for someone else, it might not work for you as well. So you might have to try more than one antibiotic to treat your UTI.

Is Monuril similar to other treatments?

Answer:
Monuril contains fosfomycin, the same active ingredient found in Alexi. Both come as granules and have the same concentration of active ingredients. The only differences are the name and company that produces them, as well as their appearance and cost.

What are the side effects of Monuril?

Answer:
As with all medicines, Monuril can cause side effects which might affect some people. Common side effects include:

  • headache;

  • dizziness;

  • diarrhoea;

  • nausea;

  • indigestion;

  • abdominal pain;

  • infection of the female genital organs.
