Sunsense is a sun cream developed in Australia and built for the highest level of sun protection. It can be applied to the face and neck, and has a sun protection factor of 50+. Sunsense provides comprehensive protection against sun damage for people with vitiligo. It’s lightweight, non-oily, and contains vitamin B3 to moisturise the skin while providing a protective barrier against the sun.
People with vitiligo, particularly those with fair skin, are advised to use a sunscreen1 that offers protection against both UVA and UVB forms of ultraviolet light. Sunscreen serves as a protective barrier, mitigating the risk of sunburn and preventing potential long-term damage. Additionally, it plays a role in minimising tanning, thereby reducing the noticeable contrast between unaffected and depigmented skin.
A study found that where sunscreen was applied regularly by people with vitiligo, there was a highly significant decrease in the difference of the pigmentation of healthy skin against vitiliginous skin.2
How does Sunsense work?
Sunscreens like Sunsense work as a shield against UV rays from the sun. Chemical sunscreens do this by absorbing UV radiation and mineral sunscreens do this by reflecting the UV radiation. Sunsense has both chemical and mineral ingredients to provide comprehensive cover from UVA and UVB rays.
UVA rays are the same strength no matter the weather (that means even on cloudy days!) and they are able to penetrate glass. Overexposure to these can lead to premature ageing and an increased risk of skin cancer.
UVB rays are responsible for sunburn and skin cancer. They vary in strength throughout the year but can reflect off water or snow, so they can still be a risk during colder months.
The active ingredients bemotrizinol 0.8% and oxybenzone 2.4% provide comprehensive protection from the sun’s UV rays. Bemotrizinol is the most effective UV absorber, absorbing both UVA and UVB rays fully. It is also ‘photostable’, meaning it won’t degrade or lose effectiveness when exposed to sunlight.3 Oxybenzone works as an added layer of protection against UVA rays. It absorbs them before they can reach your skin – meaning you’re protected from the sun even when you can’t see it. Sunsense SPF50 creates multiple filters to protect the skin from potentially harmful UV-related effects that could worsen vitiligo.
Are there different formulations of Sunsense?
Sunsense comes in a few different variations. Sunsense Daily Face SPF50+ sunscreen has a tinted variation to help create an even skin tone across the face. Sunsense Face Ultra Light is another daily use facial sunscreen that provides an invisible lightweight finish, while also being suitable for individuals with sensitive skin.
Sunsense lotion can provide sun protection for your whole body, while Sunsense lip balm protects the delicate skin of the lips from sun damage. All formulations of Sunsense provide comprehensive protection from sun damage.

How to use Sunsense
Apply a liberal amount – at least one teaspoon – of cream to the entire face and neck daily. Be sure to apply to your ears and scalp too, and anywhere else that your skin will be exposed to the sun. This should be done at least 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and after cleansing the skin. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, exercising, or sweating.
How long does Sunsense last for?
Like other sunscreens, Sunsense should be reapplied every two hours to ensure continuous and effective protection against UV radiation. Factors like sweating, water exposure, friction of clothing, and the natural breakdown of sunscreen can make it less effective. This routine helps maintain consistent coverage, and minimises the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage during extended sun exposure.
What happens if I use too much Sunsense?
There are no negative side effects associated with the use of too much Sunsense. If you use more than necessary, you may be left with a white cast on the skin and your face may feel oily to the touch. Any excess can be rubbed into other parts of the body.
It’s more important to make sure you use enough to protect yourself against harmful UV rays.

FAQ: Sunsense
Have something specific you want to know? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
Is Sunsense okay to use on sensitive skin?
Answer:
Sunsense sunscreen is lightweight, oil-free, and fragrance-free. It has been dermatologically tested and found to be safe for sensitive skin.
However, everyone is different. Read the ingredients carefully to make sure Sunsense is right for you – particularly if you have any allergies or are sensitive to other skin products.
Is Sunsense cruelty-free?
Answer:
Sunsense is cruelty-free. The manufacturer doesn’t conduct any animal testing or use any third-parties that do. All products are tested on human volunteers.
The ingredients in Sunsense are derived from plants or are synthetic, meaning it’s safe for vegans to use.
What alternatives are there to Sunsense?
Answer:
Sunsense is a broad spectrum sunscreen, meaning that it provides protection from both UVA and UVB, to a high factor. Alternative options would be sunscreens that provide the same level of SPF and that protect from both UVA and UVB radiation.
Is Sunsense a mineral sunscreen?
Answer:
Sunsense is primarily a chemical sunscreen, but it does contain some mineral elements, such as titanium dioxide.
To break it down: when it comes to sunscreens, there are basically two types you can go for: mineral and chemical. Mineral sunscreens act like a shield on your skin, reflecting away those UV rays.
Chemical sunscreens work a bit differently. Ingredients like oxybenzone and avobenzone play around with their chemical structure to absorb those UV rays.
Then there's the hybrid sunscreen – like Sunsense, a mix of both mineral and chemical ingredients. It's got a thinner formula than one alone that's easier to rub in.
Can you get Sunsense on prescription?
Answer:
Sunsense is available on prescription for people who have a genetic disorder that affects the skin’s susceptibility to sun damage, such as vitiligo.
