Skinoren is an acne cream. It kills the bacteria on your skin causing acne and reduces the overproduction of keratin, which can block pores and make your skin oily. You can only get it on prescription.
You’ll apply it to the affected area twice a day, and you should start to see a difference after a month of using it. This cream is for treating what’s known as “common acne” and is sometimes used off-label to treat other skin conditions.
Skinoren works by stopping the bacteria that causes acne from reproducing. The glands in your skin, commonly known as sebaceous glands, produce an oily substance called sebum. They do this to keep your skin and hair nice and healthy. But sometimes hormonal changes can cause the production of sebum to increase. Large amounts of sebum cause the perfect breeding ground for bacteria to develop. Although this bacteria is usually harmless, it can clog up the pores in your skin when it gathers in large amounts. Spots start to appear when the pores become blocked.
The active ingredient in Skinoren is called azelaic acid, which is an antibiotic. This targets a bacteria on your skin called Propionibacterium acnes, and weakens it by stopping it from making a protein it needs to grow. This helps your body’s immune system to kill it, and clear your acne.
There’s only one dose of Skinoren available: 200mg per gram, or 20% cream. How much you use depends on where the acne is and how much of it there is. For the whole of the face, you’ll normally use around 0.5 grams of the cream each time.
If you find that this treatment doesn’t help your acne, then you might need to try another treatment. Let us know if you don’t see the results you would expect after a couple of months of use.
