Dermovate is a prescription-strength skin treatment that’s available as a cream or an ointment. It can be applied directly to areas of irritated or inflamed skin to help manage conditions like contact dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis.
The active ingredient, clobetasol propionate, is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids (often just referred to as ‘steroids’) are widely used to treat dermatological conditions like vitiligo and lichen planus. Topical corticosteroids can generally be split into four groups, depending on how potent they’re considered to be — low, moderate, high and ultra-high potency. Clobetasol falls into the last category, which means it can often work in just a few days. Because of its strength, you’ll need to be cautious about using it on areas where your skin is thin, like your face.
Topical steroids work by reducing inflammation and irritation. Clobetasol propionate is one of the most potent steroids available, and can treat a range of skin conditions. It has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties that can reduce the swelling and itching caused by dermatitis.
Dermatitis is a term that covers multiple skin conditions, such as eczema, contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis (that affects the scalp). Often there are a lot of similarities between these conditions, such as inflammation, itchiness and redness. Dermovate can reduce these symptoms and relieve the pain brought on by aggravated skin.
The formula you’ll be recommended is usually determined by your symptoms and the appearance of your skin. Cream might be the preferred option if your skin is moist, whereas ointment might work better for dry, flakey skin.
Dermovate ointment and cream comes in two size tubes — 30 grams or 100 grams. The two formulas are available in the same strengths and contain 0.05% clobetasol propionate.
The amount you’re prescribed will depend on factors like the severity of your dermatitis, and how long it’s recommended you use Dermovate for based on this.

Both formulas (the cream or the ointment) are applied in the same way:
Washing your hands after each application means you’re less likely to spread Dermovate to sensitive areas of skin that the medication can aggravate.
Dermovate will work differently for each person that uses it. How long you’re told to use this medication for can also depend which skin condition you’re treating. For contact dermatitis, you might only need to use the cream or ointment for a week.
If your dermatitis is more long-term, or tends to recur, you might be able to use Dermovate for longer than is usually recommended under a clinician’s supervision.
Topical treatments can be more effective the longer you allow them to work. One study found that clobetasol propionate was most effective when it had two hours contact with patients’ skin when compared with half an hour of contact.
Whether you’re using Dermovate cream or ointment, the same rules apply if you make any mistakes during your treatment. If you use it the way it's been prescribed, you won’t need to worry, but there are a few things worth remembering.
You don’t need to apply extra Dermovate if you miss your usual dose. You can apply it as soon as you remember provided it’s not too close to when you’re next due to use it. In this case, just skip the missed dose and carry on with your normal routine.
Let a clinician know if you’re planning on suddenly stopping either the cream or the ointment, as doing so can sometimes make symptoms worse. If you ever accidentally swallow any Dermovate, seek immediate medical attention at your nearest hospital.
