What is Competact?

Competact is a daily tablet treatment for diabetes. It contains two active ingredients, each with a slightly different mode of action, and it should be used when metformin alone hasn’t been able to properly control your blood sugar levels.

Type 2 diabetes usually happens in adulthood when your body either doesn’t produce enough insulin, or is unable to use the insulin that it does produce as effectively as it should be doing. Treatments like Competact help you to control your blood glucose levels by helping your body make better use of the insulin it produces.

How does Competact work?

The two active ingredients in Competact, metformin and pioglitazone, work together to help your condition. Pioglitazone makes your cells more sensitive to insulin, which helps your body to be more effective at using the insulin that it produces, and metformin works by inhibiting glucose production and reducing its absorption in the gut.

These two actions together help you to reduce your blood sugar levels and manage your condition.

What doses of Competact are there?

There’s only one strength of Competact tablets, which is 15mg of pioglitazone and 850mg of metformin. The standard dose is to take two tablets a day at separate times, but our clinician might lower your dose or prescribe additional metformin or pioglitazone.

How to take Competact

You should always make sure you follow the advice of our clinician when taking Competact. The standard dose is to take one tablet, twice a day, but this may differ based on your needs. To take it, simply swallow one tablet, whole, with a glass of water. Your chance of getting an upset stomach will be lower if you take it with (or just after) food.

How long does it take Competact to work?

It can take about four weeks of taking Competact for your blood sugar levels to reduce. Your condition will be reviewed 3-6 months after you start taking Competact to see how you’re responding to it. If it’s not working to control your blood sugar levels as expected then you’ll probably need to switch to another treatment. [1]

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Competact?

You should seek medical help straight away if you take too much Competact. Your blood sugar might fall below the normal level, so you might be advised to increase it by having sugary foods or drinks. If you forget your dose of Competact, skip that one and carry on as normal, and don’t double your next dose to make up for the missed one. Don’t stop taking Competact without speaking with our clinician first.

How is Competact different from other diabetes treatments?

Competact is a combination treatment, containing two types of commonly prescribed diabetes medicines. Metformin is usually the first treatment prescribed to people with diabetes, which is also contained in Competact. The other active ingredient, pioglitazone, belongs to a group of medicines called glitazones.

There are, though, plenty of other types of treatment that you can take for your diabetes. Finding a treatment that works best for your condition can take a bit of time, and you might need to cycle through a few before you find one that’s best for you. Diabetes treatments can also come in different forms, so where Competact is available as tablets, other treatments might need to be injected.

Is Competact similar to any other treatments?

There aren’t any other treatments containing the same active ingredients as Competact, you can only get them as individual treatments. This means that there isn’t another single treatment that you can get that will work in quite the same way to help your condition.

Yes, you need a prescription for Competact. This is because it isn’t suitable for everyone, and you’ll need to be monitored whilst you’re taking it to make sure that it continues to be safe and suitable for you.
