Lyxumia is an injection treatment for type-2 diabetes. It contains the active ingredient lixisenatide, which belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 agonists. Like other Type-2 diabetes treatments, it works by helping your body to lower its blood sugar levels, but it should be used alongside a healthy diet and exercise for it to have the best effect.

Lyxumia also suppresses the release of glucagon - the hormone that increases your liver's glucose production - and slows the emptying of your stomach when you eat, which can slow down the absorption of glucose and suppress your appetite.
What doses of Lyxumia are there?
Lyxumia comes in two doses: a 10 microgram solution and a 20 microgram solution. The 10 mcg pen is green, and the 20 mcg pen is purple. The typical course is to use the 10 mcg (green) pen once a day for the first 14 days, followed by the 20 mcg (purple) pen once a day from then onwards.

How to use Lyxumia
Before you use Lyxumia for the first time, you should be shown how to use it by a clinician. You should always use it exactly as you’ve been instructed to.
You should inject Lyxumia in the hour before a meal. Ideally, you should inject it before the same meal each day - whichever is most convenient for you
Lyxumia should be injected subcutaneously (into the skin) into your stomach, upper leg or upper arm
Always use a new needle for each injection. Dispose of each needle after use in an appropriate sharps container
Only use needles that are compatible with Lyxumia pens
Before you use Lyxumia for the first time, it’ll need to be ‘activated’. This is to make sure that it’s working properly and that the dose for your first injection is correct
Don’t use your Lyxumia pen if you think it might be damaged. Replace the pen, and don’t try to repair it yourself.
How long does it take Lyxumia to work?
Lyxumia gets to work quickly in the body, but it can take many weeks for a noticeable change to your HbA1c (the 2-3 month average of your blood glucose levels) to occur. If your average blood sugar levels haven’t dropped after using Lyxumia for a few months your clinician might recommend that you use additional or alternative treatment.
What should I do if I make a mistake when using Lyxumia?
Seek medical help straight away if you accidentally use more Lyxumia than you should. Using too much Lyxumia can make you feel or be sick. If you forget your dose of Lyxumia, you can use it in the hour before your next meal. Don’t double the dose to make up for a missed dose, and don’t use more than one injection in the same day unless otherwise instructed.
