Vokanamet is a dual-action treatment for type-2 diabetes. Containing the active ingredients metformin and canagliflozin, it works in a few different ways to reduce the high blood sugar caused by your condition.
When you eat sugary foods, your body releases hormones that stimulate your pancreas to release another hormone called insulin. As you digest the food, the sugar from it enters your bloodstream. Insulin works to move the sugar from your bloodstream into your cells for it to be broken down as energy.
Type-2 diabetes develops when your body is no longer able to secrete as much insulin as it should, or your cells have lost sensitivity to insulin (or both). This can lead to you getting high concentrations of sugar in your bloodstream, which can lead to more long-term health problems.
How does Vokanamet work?
Metformin, the most commonly prescribed ‘first-line’ treatment for type-2 diabetes, works in three ways to reduce your blood sugar:
Reducing the amount of glucose (sugar) that’s produced in your liver
Increasing your cells’ sensitivity to insulin so that your body can use it better
Lowering the amount of glucose that’s absorbed from the foods you eat
Canagliflozin, the other active ingredient in Vokanamet, is what’s known as an SGLT-2 inhibitor. SGLT-2 is a protein responsible for reabsorbing glucose from the kidneys back into the bloodstream. By inhibiting the function of this protein, Canagliflozin allows more glucose to be excreted through your urine, which helps to lower your blood sugar levels.
What doses of Vokanamet are there?
Vokanamet is available in two doses: 50mg/850mg, and 50mg/1,000mg. The dose that you’ll be prescribed will depend on your individual health needs.

How to take Vokanamet
You should always take Vokanamet exactly as prescribed by our clinician. To take Vokanamet:
swallow one tablet, whole, with water
take one tablet, twice a day
it’s best to take your tablet with a meal (it will reduce your risk of getting a stomach upset)
try to take your doses at the same time each day - it’ll help you remember to take them
if you’ve been prescribed another treatment for high cholesterol (such as cholestyramine), you should take Vokanamet at least an hour before or four to six hours after taking it.
How long does it take Vokanamet to work?
Vokanamet, in the short term, should get to work quickly to help lower your blood sugar. It might take a few days for it to become most effective, though - and it’ll likely take at least a week or two for you to see any difference in your HbA1c (the test of your average blood glucose levels over the past 2-3 months).
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Vokanamet?
As with any other treatment containing metformin, taking too much Vokanamet can cause lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a serious health concern which can cause symptoms such as sickness, nausea, dizziness, tiredness and difficulty breathing. If left untreated, lactic acidosis can lead to a coma, so if you’ve taken too much Vokanamet and start to feel unwell, seek medical help straight away. If you forget to take your dose of Vokanamet, you can take it when you remember, so long as it’s not too close to your next scheduled dose. If it is, simply skip the forgotten dose and carry on as normal. Don’t double your dose to make up for the missed one.

How is Vokanamet different from other diabetes treatments?
Answer:
Vokanamet is a combination treatment. This means that it contains two complementary active ingredients, both of which work together to give you more effective blood sugar reduction than each active ingredient on its own (monotherapy).
Monotherapy with metformin is usually the first port of call when it comes to diabetes treatment. But if that doesn’t work to keep your blood sugar under control, there are a range of other types of diabetes treatments - each of which with different modes of action - that can help to lower your blood sugar levels.
Vokanamet should only usually be prescribed when diet and exercise and metformin alone haven’t worked for you. Our clinician should be able to recommend the most suitable treatment for you based on your health history and needs.
Is Vokanamet similar to any other treatments?
Answer:
The two active ingredients in Vokanamet: metformin and canagliflozin, can be found as individual treatments. Canagliflozin is sold under the name Invokana, whereas metformin can be found in a number of different branded treatments as well as a generic (unbranded) treatment.
Synjardy and Xigduo are similar treatments to Vokanamet, in that they both contain a combination of metformin and an SGLT-2 inhibitor, though they differ in which specific SGLT-2 inhibitor they use (Synjardy uses empagliflozin and Xigduo contains dapagliflozin).
This means that although these treatments work in broadly the same way to treat your condition, you might find that each treatment can work for or suit you better than others.
Do I need a prescription for Vokanamet?

Yes, like all diabetes treatments, you need a prescription for Vokanamet. This is because it’s not a suitable or safe treatment for you to take without an accurate diagnosis, and your condition will need to be monitored whilst you’re taking it to make sure that it’s an effective treatment for you.
Which dose of Vokanamet should I use?
Answer:
The dose of Vokanamet that you’re prescribed will depend on your health needs, as well as whatever other treatments you might be taking. You’ll probably be prescribed the lower dose to start off with, which can be increased to the higher strength treatment if it doesn’t seem to be controlling your blood sugar as well as it could be.
