What are Xigduo tablets?

Xigduo tablets are a combined tablet that lowers your blood sugar. It’s designed for people with type two diabetes, to help you get your blood glucose under control.

How do Xigduo tablets work?

Xigduo tablets have two active ingredients, dapagliflozin and metformin. Dapagliflozin is a type of medicine called an SGLT2 inhibitor. This means it blocks a protein called SGLT2 from working properly. This stops the kidneys from absorbing as much glucose, which lowers the amount in your blood.

Metformin is one of a class of drugs called biguanides, which work by decreasing blood sugar production and stopping you from absorbing as much glucose from your food. Together, these drugs work together powerfully to lower blood sugar, helping you get your diabetes treatment on track.

What doses of Xigduo are there?

There are two sizes of Xigduo tablets. One has 5mg of dapagliflozin propanediol per 850mg of metformin. The larger dose tablet has 5mg of dapagliflozin propanediol per 1000mg metformin. Which tablet is right for you will depend on your symptoms.

The usual dose is one tablet twice a day. The exact dose you take will depend on your symptoms. So if the first dose you try isn’t enough to control your diabetes, go back and talk to your clinician about your dose, or message us.

  • Don’t crush or chew the tablets.

How long does it take Xigduo tablets to work?

Xigduo’s full results can take a while to show. Dapagliflozin starts to work on your glucose levels a couple of hours after you take it, while metformin can take a few days to lower your blood sugar.

What should I do if I make a mistake while taking Xigduo?

Are Xigduo tablets similar to any other treatment?

You should avoid drinking too much alcohol while you’re taking Xigduo tablets. Drinking alcohol while taking Xigduo raises your risk of ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition. It can also lower the effects of your medication.

Alcohol can also make managing your diabetes more difficult, as drinking too much affects your overall health. It can also increase your risk of hypoglycaemia. You should make sure to never drink too much in one sitting, or drink too often.

Do I need a prescription for Xigduo tablets?
