What is Perinal Spray?

Perinal is a spray treatment that relieves haemorrhoid symptoms. It contains the active ingredients hydrocortisone (a corticosteroid) and lidocaine (an anaesthetic), and can be applied directly to your anus to relieve the discomfort caused by piles.

Haemorrhoids (often called piles) are a common condition where lumps form inside and around your anus. Symptoms include itching and pain around the affected area, sometimes accompanied by discomfort after you’ve been to the toilet. Often, people with piles feel like they need to empty their bowels immediately after they’ve just been. Bleeding is another common symptom.^[1]

Applying a corticosteroid like Perinal several times a day won’t cure your piles, but it can soothe the uncomfortable symptoms you get throughout the day. If your haemorrhoids don’t clear up within 7 days, your clinician will advise you about the best ways of getting further treatment.

How does Perinal Spray work?

Perinal combines two active ingredients, a corticosteroid (hydrocortisone) and an anaesthetic (lidocaine). Corticosteroids are steroids that tackle inflammation, and are different from the ones used to increase muscle mass (anabolic steroids).^[2] Lidocaine creates a numbing effect in the areas it’s applied to, which can reduce soreness and the urge to itch your bottom.

What doses does Perinal Spray come in?

Perinal comes in a 30ml tube, with a fitted spray pump attached to it.

The usual dose is one spray over the affected area, up to three times a day. You should avoid using the spray for longer than a week, as it can aggravate your skin and increase your chances of developing dermatitis or other complications.

Are there any treatments similar to Perinal Spray?

Answer:

There are a lot of different options when it comes to getting relief from haemorrhoids. Proctosedyl works in the same way as Perinal, by combining a corticosteroid and a local anaesthetic. Like hydrocortisone, it’s for short term use and shouldn’t be used for any longer than 7 days. It comes as an ointment or a suppository, which is inserted directly into your anus.

Scheriproct also combines the same types of medications, but uses a different type of corticosteroid called prednisolone.

Along with sprays, ointments and suppositories to relieve your haemorrhoid symptoms, there are things you can try which might help prevent flare-ups. If you feel the need to empty your bowels, you should do so as soon as you get the urge. Putting off going to the toilet could cause your stools to back up, and the strain from being constipated will likely aggravate your symptoms. You should also avoid sitting down for too long, and try to place a cushion beneath you if you’re on a hard surface. It’s also important to keep your back passage clean, as not doing so can cause irritation. You could try gently using a baby wipe, or a wet cloth, to gently clean the area.^[1]

Will Perinal Spray give me side effects?

Answer:

All medications have the potential to cause side effects. (That’s not a guarantee you’ll get any, though.) Topically-applied corticosteroids are usually well tolerated when used for the right amount of time.

A tingling sensation after you’ve applied your Perinal spray is completely normal, and should only be temporary.

If you get any serious side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, you should seek medical attention immediately. It could be the sign of an allergic reaction, so we recommend you act quickly and get the proper help.

How long does Perinal Spray take to work?

Answer:

Topical corticosteroids should provide relief from your symptoms as soon as you begin using them. Steroids work by calming your immune response, which should reduce the itching and swelling caused by your piles.

Prolonged use of preparations that contain corticosteroids can lead to your skin becoming more sensitive, and can also cause skin atrophy and dermatitis. For this reason, you should avoid using Perinal for any longer than 7 days. The spray works by reducing haemorrhoid symptoms, but if your piles haven’t cleared up after a week you should stop using Perinal and speak to a clinician about other treatment options.

Will Perinal Spray get rid of my haemorrhoids?

Answer:

Treatments like Perinal are used to manage the symptoms caused by having haemorrhoids. They can provide relief from soreness and itchiness throughout the day. They won’t get rid of your piles altogether, though. Sometimes haemorrhoids shrink naturally, so won’t need further attention beyond symptom management.

Rubber band ligation (RBL) is a commonly performed, non-surgical option to remove piles completely. It involves placing a rubber band around each haemorrhoid, which constricts the blood supply to it. It’s an effective procedure, and usually takes around one or two weeks to work.^[2]
