What is Xyloproct Ointment?

Xyloproct Ointment is a topical piles treatment, which means that it’s applied directly to the affected area. The active ingredients in Xyloproct work together to treat the symptoms of piles such as itching, pain, and inflammation. Whilst they don’t cure piles, they can help with the pain and stop them from getting worse.

How does Xyloproct Ointment work?

Xyloproct Ointment uses two ingredients: lidocaine and hydrocortisone. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic, which works by numbing the area and reducing pain.[1] It does this by stopping nerves from sending pain signals to your brain.[2] Hydrocortisone is a common corticosteroid that helps to reduce inflammation and itching.[1] Together they’re an effective treatment for piles, as lidocaine works quickly to provide pain relief and hydrocortisone helps subdue symptoms of irritation.

How to use Xyloproct Ointment

Xyloproct ointment is for short term use only. Your prescriber will tell you how much to use and how often. You’ll typically use it several times per day.

Xyloproct ointment comes with an applicator to help with applying the treatment. Be sure to clean this applicator after each time you use it. Make sure that you don’t apply too much ointment when using the applicator.

You’ll typically apply Xyloproct in the morning, at night, and after you have a bowel movement.

How long does Xyloproct Ointment take to work?

Make sure to follow your clinician’s advice for the best results. It may take several days for you to see the full benefits of using Xyloproct ointment. Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic which can provide relief within an hour of application.[1] The numbing effect can then last up to a few hours. One study also found that symptom relief was reported after 10 minutes of applying, lasting up to 10–12 hours.[2]

What if I make a mistake using Xyloproct Ointment?

If you’ve used too much ointment or ingested it orally seek medical attention as soon as possible. Don’t use hydrocortisone treatments for too long as it can make your skin sensitive and long-term use can make your skin thinner.

What are the side effects of using Xyloproct Ointment?

Answer:
Like all medicines, Xyloproct Ointment can cause side effects (but not everyone will get them).

However if you notice these symptoms, it could be a sign of an allergic reaction:

  • Sudden rash or hives;

  • Swelling of the face, lips or tongue;

  • Shortness of breath or wheezing.


In this case, stop using Xyloproct and seek urgent medical attention.

If you experience any soreness and bleeding, it's advised you stop using Xyloproct and speak to your clinician, too. Other side effects may include redness, swelling and itching. These should go away shortly after application, especially after you've used it a few times.

Are there alternative treatments to Xyloproct Ointment?

Answer:
There are several alternative treatments for treatment of piles. Many topical ointments and creams will use a combination of a corticosteroid (hydrocortisone or prednisolone) with a local anaesthetic (cinchocaine). Some treatments may also use an ingredient like zinc oxide or allantoin which both soothes and protects the skin. There are also treatments you can buy over-the-counter from pharmacies or some supermarkets (like Anusol ) which use a range of active ingredients. And lastly there are suppositories, which may be preferable if you have sensitive skin.

If you want to treat your piles without medication, you could try having a sitz bath, which is a shallow water bath you sit in to relieve discomfort. Changing your diet and increasing exercise can also help, as it can promote healthier bowel movements, meaning you’re not straining as much or getting constipated. If medical treatments and home remedies aren’t working, you may need to undergo a procedure like rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy or surgery.[1]

You should not use Xyloproct Ointment whilst pregnant unless directed by your prescriber.
