What are Finasteride + Minoxidil drops?

Finasteride and minoxidil drops are, essentially, what they say on the tin. A topical compound treatment combining two popular hair loss treatments which work in tandem to:

  • help stop hair loss; and:
  • promote hair regrowth.

You apply the drops to your scalp every day, where they’ll be absorbed through your skin. Over time and with consistent use, they should work to counteract the chemical process that causes hair loss and encourage hair regrowth.

Some research has shown that finasteride and minoxidil can work better together than either ingredient on their own, and that topical finasteride causes fewer side effects than oral tablets (the ‘standard’ form of finasteride).1

How does topical Finasteride + Minoxidil work?

Finasteride works by stopping the hormone testosterone from being converted into a different hormone called DHT – the process that often causes male pattern baldness.2

Minoxidil, on the other hand, works by stimulating your hair follicles and increasing the blood flow to your scalp, which helps to encourage new, thicker hairs to grow.3

Together, these ingredients work to disrupt the process that causes natural hair loss and encourage new hair growth.

How to use Finasteride + Minoxidil drops

  • Use the drops at a similar time each day.
  • For best results, make sure your scalp is clean and dry before application.
  • Using the pipette, measure the correct dose as outlined in the instructions that come with your treatment.
  • Tilt your head back slightly and hold the dropper on or just above your scalp.
  • In the areas of thinning hair, squeeze the medicine slowly onto your scalp, parting your hair as you go.
  • Try to distribute the treatment as evenly as possible across the affected areas of your scalp.
  • Distribute the drops in circular motion using your fingertips.
  • If you’re using the drops before bed, wait for the drops to be absorbed first, then wash your hair the following morning or before your next application.
  • Wash your hands after use.

How long will it take to see the difference?

You should start to notice a difference after around three months of consistent use, but it tends to take longer to notice the full benefit – usually around a year. During the first few months you might notice more shedding than usual. Don’t worry, this is normal and temporary, and actually means the treatment is working.

What if I make a mistake while using the drops?

If you use too much of the treatment for any reason, rinse your hair with running water as soon as possible before reapplying the treatment. It shouldn’t cause any issues, but if you notice any side effects, seek medical help right away.

If you forget to use the drops one day, simply skip that dose and continue as normal. Don’t use twice the normal amount to make up for a forgotten dose.

If you get the drops on your face, rinse your skin straight away with plenty of water. If you get the drops in your eyes, try to rinse them as best as possible and seek medical advice.

Are minoxidil and finasteride safe to use together?

Answer:
Yes. In fact, it’s often recommended for best results.1 Topical minoxidil and oral finasteride can be prescribed together (as separate medicines), but as a combined formulation it’s currently unlicensed. This doesn’t mean it isn’t safe, though – the serum has undergone plenty of clinical testing to make sure it’s safe and effective. It might be licensed and manufactured as a combined formulation in the future, but in the meantime, the treatment is made-to-order at regulated and licensed compounding pharmacies.

Will I get side effects from the drops?

Answer:
Like with any medicine, side effects are possible with Finasteride + Minoxidil Drops. That doesn’t mean you’ll get any though — and many people don’t.

The most common side effects (affecting up to 1 in 10 people) are:

  • Headache

  • Itching

  • Hirsutism (unwanted or excessive non-scalp hair growth)


If you experience either of the following, stop using the treatment straight away and ask for urgent medical help:

  • Chest pain

  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, which might make it hard to breathe or swallow


There have been rare reports of people getting sexual side effects while taking finasteride, such as reduced libido, erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems. These side effects are usually temporary, but occasionally they persist beyond treatment, and have only been seen in people taking the oral (tablet) form of finasteride.

It’s yet to be seen if these same effects can occur in those using topical finasteride, but because the treatment only works locally, it’s thought that they might not. A recent trial found that side effects of topical finasteride tended to remain local to the application site, such as itching, burning and irritation on the scalp.2

How effective is topical Finasteride + Minoxidil?

Answer:
Early trials have shown the combined effects of finasteride and minoxidil in a topical spray to be significantly more effective than either treatment on its own.3 However, another recent study found oral finasteride to be more effective, despite over 60% of patients seeing results by week six with the combined treatment. The study did find the combination to be more effective than topical minoxidil on its own, though.4

In real-world use, it’s worth noting that oral treatments may be more effective because they’re easier to use correctly and consistently. Using topical treatments takes up more time, and you might miss certain parts of your scalp when using the treatment.

Is it a permanent solution for hair loss?

Answer:
Unfortunately not. The treatment only works as long as you use it for. Once you stop using the treatment, your natural hair loss will return as before. There’s currently no long-term medicinal cure for hair loss beyond a hair transplant.
