What is Ditropan?

Ditropan is a type of medicine that’s known as an antimuscarinic (or sometimes anticholinergic), which is a type of muscle relaxant. These medicines are licensed to treat bladder problems, but research has shown they can help manage excessive sweating, too.

Ditropan is prescribed off-label for hyperhidrosis. This means that while it hasn’t been officially approved for hyperhidrosis, studies show that it’s a safe and effective treatment when used for this purpose.

How does Ditropan work?

Antimuscarinic medicines like Ditropan help manage excessive sweating by blocking the effects of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. This neurotransmitter is used by your nervous system to tell your sweat glands to produce sweat – so blocking its effects can help keep excess sweating under control.[1]

What doses does Ditropan come in?

Ditropan comes in two different doses: 2.5mg and 5mg. The dose you use will depend on the severity of your symptoms, and how well Ditropan helps to manage them. Your clinician will help monitor your condition and treatment to find the lowest dose that keeps your symptoms in check, to minimise the risk of any side effects.

How to take Ditropan

Take your prescribed dose of Ditropan every day with a drink of water. You can take your medicine with or without food. The dose of Ditropan you take will depend on your condition, and you should have been instructed by your doctor how much to take. It’s usually between 2.5mg and 10mg of Ditropan daily, depending on the severity of your symptoms.[1]

How long does it take for Ditropan to work?

Ditropan won’t cure hyperhidrosis – it’s a long-term treatment that will help manage your symptoms. Your clinician will check in with you regularly to see how your medication is working, and to make sure you’re not experiencing any side effects you’re struggling with.[2]

What should I do if I make a mistake taking Ditropan?

If you forget to take a dose of Ditropan, you can take your missed dose as soon as you remember. But if it’s nearly time to take your next dose, skip the one you missed and take your next as normal. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If you accidentally take too much Ditropan, get medical attention right away – and make sure to take your medicine and its packaging with you so the doctor knows exactly what you’ve taken. Symptoms of taking too much Ditropan can include:

  • restlessness
  • dizziness
  • feeling light-headed
  • an elevated or uneven heart rate
  • breathing problems
  • falling unconscious

How effective is Ditropan?

Answer:
Ditropan has proven across multiple clinical trials to be an effective treatment for excessive sweating. One study of 139 people with excessive sweating of the hands found that more than 80% of individuals reported improved symptoms, and 74.1% an improvement in quality of life.[2] Another study compared 25 patients taking placebo with 25 patients receiving Ditropan; 72.7% of those taking placebo had no results, while 73.9% of those taking Ditropan reported relief from their symptoms.[2]

Are there any Ditropan alternatives for hyperhidrosis?

Answer:
Yes; Ditropan isn’t a first-line treatment for hyperhidrosis, and is usually prescribed when other options can’t be used or haven’t been effective. Driclor is a powerful roll-on antiperspirant that contains the active ingredient aluminium chloride hexahydrate. It works by binding to certain molecules in your sweat to form a barrier over your sweat glands, stopping excess sweat from escaping.[1]

Do I need a prescription for Ditropan?

Answer:
Yes. Ditropan isn’t suitable for everyone to take, and a clinician will need to check to see if it’s the right treatment for you. This is especially true if you have kidney or liver problems, an overactive thyroid, high blood pressure, or heart problems. If Ditropan isn’t the right treatment for you, your healthcare provider may be able to recommend an alternative.

Are there any Ditropan side effects?

Answer:
Like any medicine you take, there’s a chance Ditropan could cause some side effects. The good news is these won’t affect everybody. The most common side effects (affecting more than one in 10 people) include:

  • constipation

  • nausea

  • dry mouth

  • dry skin

  • headache

  • drowsiness

  • dizziness

  • blurred vision


Common side effects (affecting one to 10 people in 100 people) include:

  • dry eyes

  • diarrhoea

  • vomiting

  • confusion

  • hot flushes

  • being unable to completely empty your bladder

  • an elevated, irregular, or forceful heartbeat


If you get: a rash; any difficulty swallowing or breathing; or swelling of your lips, face, throat, or tongue, seek medical attention right away. It could be a sign of a severe allergic reaction.
