Spasmonal is an antispasmodic medication that eases muscle tension in your gut and womb. It’s designed to help you manage and control symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
IBS is a digestive disorder that can cause symptoms like abdominal pain and discomfort; bloating; and issues with bowel movements (such as diarrhoea or constipation). IBS is diagnosed based on the Rome III system, meaning you should have:
While doctors still don't have a complete grasp of its triggers, factors like the speed with which you digest food, increased gut sensitivity, and family history seem to be connected to IBS. Stress can often worsen symptoms, and you might also notice that certain triggers, like spicy foods, make your symptoms more pronounced at times as well.
Triggers of IBS can vary from person to person. Some people might feel better by identifying and steering clear of certain triggers. Others might need a mix of adjusting their diet, handling stress and taking medications to ease their symptoms.
Spasmonal has alverine citrate as its active ingredient, which belongs to a group of medications known as antispasmodics. They’re commonly used as the first choice of treatment for IBS. Alverine works as a calcium channel blocker, making certain proteins in the smooth muscles of your gut and womb less sensitive to calcium.
So Spasmonal causes the smooth muscles in your gut and stomach to relax, reducing muscle spasms. This eases the pain caused by muscle tension during IBS flare-ups.
Spasmonal comes in two strengths: one has 60mg alverine citrate, and the stronger version, known as Spasmonal Forte, has 120mg. You should always take Spasmonal as your clinician has instructed you to, but typically you’ll take one or two capsules of Spasmonal 60mg, up to three times a day. And for Spasmonal Forte, it's usually one capsule, up to three times daily.

Our clinical team will give you specific instructions on how to take it, and the package you receive comes with a patient information leaflet. Make sure you read it and follow the instructions carefully. But if you’re unsure about anything or you have any questions, just log into your account and send us a message.
Typically, you’ll be advised to take Spasmonal capsules with a drink of water, either before or after meals. The usual dose is one or two capsules up to three times a day depending on the severity of your symptoms.
Spasmonal kicks in within one to two hours of taking it, but the timing can vary due to the high variability of alverine's effects on different people. Alverine citrate, the active ingredient, changes in your body to its main active metabolite, called 4-hydroxy alverine. This metabolite peaks in your bloodstream around 1 to 1½ hours after taking Spasmonal, which is when it begins to work.
But it can take up to two weeks of using it regularly before you start noticing a big improvement in how you feel. So, don't worry if you don't get instant results — give it some time and keep following your treatment plan.
If you take more Spasmonal than you should, watch out for signs of an overdose: low blood pressure, lightheadedness, elevated heart rate, dilated pupils, impaired vision, dry mouth and throat, difficulty breathing and difficulty passing urine. Call your doctor or head straight to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department in this case.
If you skipped a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's been over 4 hours since your usual dose, just skip the missed one and stick to your regular schedule.
